Job summary

A leading health services provider in Halifax is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Children’s Intensive Service to provide specialized care for children under 13 with serious emotional and behavioral issues. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and relevant experience in psychiatric nursing. This position involves flexible shift work and requires strong communication and crisis intervention skills. Competitive compensation is offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Registered or eligible to register with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.
  • Current BLS certification within the last 12 months.
  • At least one year of psychiatric nursing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage medications and prepare children and families for passes.
  • Develop care plans and provide ongoing assessments.

The Opportunity

The Children’s Intensive Service is a rehabilitative mental health inpatient setting for children under 13, typically staying about four months. Reporting to the Manager of CIS, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for applying current theory and research in children’s health and mental health care. The RN works as part of an interdisciplinary team, providing holistic, comprehensive care to children with serious emotional and behavioral problems. Responsibilities include medication management, preparing children and families for passes, ongoing assessments, care plan development, and clinical oversight. The RN may be reassigned within the Mental Health and Addictions Program and must be flexible with shift work to meet operational needs.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
  • Registered or eligible to register with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
  • Current Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada BLS certification within the last 12 months
  • Knowledge of mental health disorders and at least one year of psychiatric nursing experience
  • Knowledge of Collaborative Problem Solving; Tier 1 Certification preferred
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification required; de-escalation experience preferred
  • Commitment to Family Centred Care and training in Collaborative Problem Solving
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time, communicate effectively, and work independently and in teams
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Knowledge of additional languages, especially French, is an asset
