Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant - Pediatric Infectious Disease (CMV/Congenital)

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is seeking a motivated Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant for a full‑time position in the Child Health Program at the Children’s Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, in Winnipeg, MB. The successful applicant will work within the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (PID), specializing in the care of children with congenital infections.

The Physician Assistant (PA) will practice under the supervision of the section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, including the initial assessment of newborns exposed to congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV), and syphilis. Based on risk assessment, appropriate treatment and follow‑up will be determined. Outpatient follow‑up will consist of clinical assessment and neuro‑developmental screening and review of investigations to assess potential medication side effects, symptoms/signs of disease, indicators of disease status (syphilis serology, HIV NAT) and coordination with other programs and specialists necessary in appropriate care of congenital infection exposed infants. The PA may also assist inpatient PID consult service by conducting clinical assessments, gathering clinical information and working with the PID team to determine care plans.

Supportive Onboarding and Clinical Mentorship

Physician/Clinical Assistants in the Infectious Diseases Program receive structured onboarding and mentorship from experienced pediatric infectious diseases physicians. The program fosters continuous learning in infectious disease care, ensuring smooth integration into the team while promoting professional growth.

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications and is accompanied by a benefits package.

Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant will perform, order, and interpret diagnostic, therapeutic investigations/interventions. Duties can include performing history and physical exams in a variety of settings such as the Emergency Department, wards, as well as following patients in the pre‑/peri‑/post‑operative ward or other clinical settings.

The PA will attend clinical and educational rounds. Administrative requirements include recording all patient encounters, which may involve dictating or utilizing electronic medical records where available. Assistants must be able to communicate effectively in English with other members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

Qualifications
  • Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as a Physician Assistant or Clinical Assistant.
  • Must be eligible for a Medical Staff Appointment.
  • Prior experience preferred.
  • Candidates must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Educational Program acceptable to CPSM.
Clinical Assistants
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Medical School in Canada or abroad.
  • Must have at least one of the following:
    • Clinical Assistant Assessment
    • NAC OSCE
    • LMCC
