Overview

Your Opportunity: Under the direction of the Manager and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Therapist is responsible for providing specialized mental health assessment and consultation services in the context of clients presenting by walk in, referral or via EMS to the Urgent Care Centre at Sheldon M Chumir Health Centre, who require urgent crisis assessment in relation to acute mental health issues. The position is clinical in nature. Therapists are responsible for providing mental health assessments, therapeutic interventions, referrals and advocacy. Clinically focused liaison and consultation to colleagues within the health centre and with community services providers is also required. Therapists are required to have awareness and sensitivity to working with diverse populations. The incumbent must be able to provide service to the inner city, hard to serve population who suffer from severe mental illness and addiction issues, and who face multiple problems in the community, including homelessness, social isolation, and marginalization; and who often encounter significant barriers to accessing mental health and medical services. Awareness and knowledge of concurrent disorders is necessary. Critical clinical decisions of life threatening proportions are made on a daily basis in order to assure the safety of clients and the community, as well as to plan appropriate assessment and treatment follow-up. The Therapists must make such decisions spontaneously and independently, particularly during evening and weekend shifts. Please note that this line is primarily Day/early evening shift. As the Mental Health Therapist, you will be required to use a variety of treatment modalities (individual, family, and group) to persons experiencing significant mental health difficulties. Working both independently and as a member of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will provide evidence informed and best practices in crisis intervention, assessment, consultation, referral, case management and treatment.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Psychology; or master's degree in Social Work (clinical specialization) including education in mental health assessment and psychotherapy; or master's or bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy including training and experience in mental health assessment and provision of psychotherapy; or master's degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing including training and experience in mental health assessment and provision of psychotherapy. Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college.

Additional Required Qualifications

Minimum 5 years recent mental health experience; acute and/or community experience required. Experience working with multidisciplinary team and community agencies. Experience working with diverse populations and ability to engage in culturally sensitive interactions. Solid knowledge foundation of intervention and treatment modalities relevant to clinical disorders and psychosocial and environmental problems. Solid knowledge foundation of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM) and ability to formulate an accurate provisional diagnosis. Comprehensive knowledge of relevant community resources and legislation. Strong mental health assessment, crisis management and counselling skills. High degree of creative and flexibility, as well as the ability to work independently and to engage and work with a diverse client population. Good interpersonal skills, flexibility and an ability to work independently are essential. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a centre-wide multidisciplinary team. Good computer and typing skills. Good problem-solving skills and superior clinical judgment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in Urgent Care, Emergency department, and/or Psychiatric Emergency Services Experience in completing comprehensive assessments (mental health and addiction related). Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; superior interpersonal skills. Ability to set priorities and organize time efficiently. Ability to work in stressful, demanding and changing conditions.
