TITLE: Marine Science & Policy Analyst
TERMS: Permanent full-time position (34 hours per week, Monday to Thursday). Some travel, weekend and evening work may be required.
LOCATION: Hybrid. Based at our Vancouver (məθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ territories) office.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is hybrid, with a combination of remote work and 4/month in-office days.

SALARY: $62,000-$72,050

The Role
The purpose of this position is to provide scientific and policy expertise to support DSF’s marine program work. You will lead successful campaigns and communications, building on DSF’s legacy work focused on Southern Resident Killer Whale conservation. You are well-versed in the major issues and threats facing the marine environment and will be able to apply your scientific expertise to support partnerships and the delivery of major grants. Your work will involve networking with relevant governments, industry, stakeholders (including communities) and researchers and participating in selected management forums. Expertise in technical analysis of data, government policies and reports is essential.
You have the ability to synthesize various sources of information and recommend reforms to marine policy and practice. You will also be responsible for the preparation of presentations, briefs, reports and other communications materials, including media interviews. Beyond core deliverables, there is a lot of scope to develop a forward-looking and innovative program of work to help support the marine conservation agenda within Canada.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of integrated strategies for research, communications, campaigning, development, and project delivery in support of the Nature Team’s goals and objectives.
- Work to ensure and encourage information sharing within and across portfolios.
- Act as project and DSF spokesperson, as required.
- Identify opportunities arising from emerging trends and generates options for engaging them.
- Act as project lead on national or regional projects, as assigned.
- Prepare reports, cabinet submissions, briefing notes and other correspondence, as required.
- Develop and deliver presentations to internal and external groups, as required.
- Develop and manage project budgets.
- Manage project contractors.
- Identify and report on staff allocations and deliverables.
- Provide project reports, as required.
- Consider technical, legislative and administrative issues when planning and managing their functions.
- Implement and take responsibility for the outcome of the plans, strategies and initiatives for their work.
Qualifications (English)
We understand that experience can look different for everyone. Please share yours as it relates to:
- 5+ years significant and relevant work experience in this sector.
- Degree in marine biology, fisheries biology, aquatic ecology. Ph.D. or an MSc or equivalent degree would be considered an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Proficiency in French would be considered an asset.
- Authoritative knowledge of marine policy and a general knowledge of legislation, enforcement and environmental protection practices.
- Proven ability and experience working with Indigenous Nations and Indigenous knowledge.
- Broad knowledge of marine biodiversity and the concepts of integrated management, and ecosystem-based management.
- Knowledge of the threats to marine and aquatic environments.
- Experience interacting professionally with a wide range of stakeholders, including knowledge of best practice community engagement and citizen science.
- Strong skills in word processing and ability write for both a scientific and general audience, spreadsheet analysis, electronic communications and presentations and a working understanding of GIS.
- Expertise in orca conservation would be considered an asset.

- Connaissance des menaces pesant sur les environnements marins et aquatiques.
- Expérience professionnelle d’interaction avec un large éventail de parties prenantes, y compris connaissance des meilleures pratiques d’engagement communautaire et de science citoyenne.
- Solides compétences en traitement de texte et en rédaction (tant pour un public scientifique que grand public), en analyse de tableurs, en communications électroniques et en présentations, ainsi qu’une bonne compréhension des SIG.
- Une expertise en conservation des orques serait considérée comme un atout.
