Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity exists for a successful candidate to become a Mining Lead for Stantec’s Geotechnical Services Group in Ontario. Reporting to the Practice Leader, you will lead the pursuit and delivery of excellent work to mining clients. You will be accountable for the top line, lead the growth of the mining team within our Geotechnical Services group in Ontario, and provide innovative project solutions with exceptional quality and execution that exceed client expectations.

You will work closely with other leaders in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada to deliver professional services to clients, while championing safety, quality, innovation, and risk management processes. The role is hybrid, but primarily work from any Stantec office in Ontario. Travel to other Stantec offices, the field, and/or client meetings may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain client outreach (internally & externally) specific to the mining market
  • Conduct mining market research
  • Lead the Ontario Geotechnical team in mining pursuits
  • Lead and coordinate proposal development, proposal debriefs, backlog tracking, and client surveys
  • Lead client events (e.g., training seminars) and attend mining industry events, such as conferences and/or tradeshows
  • Develop business plans and work with the leadership team to achieve key performance indicators
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the national business strategy for Geotechnical Services, with Ontario-specific mining sector strategies and priorities
  • Lead growth in revenue generation and monitor progress using Stantec’s business tools to monitor KPIs
  • Engage in technical project work, including preparing, reviewing, and supervising technical documents such as reports, drawings, specifications, material takeoffs, cost estimates, and construction documentation
  • Participate in dam safety reviews, dam inspections, and other projects related to tailings risks and management
  • Manage and collaborate with multidisciplinary experts across civil, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, environmental, hydrogeology, and geochemistry disciplines
  • Hiring and mentoring new team members
  • Assist leadership with the training and mentorship of junior and intermediate staff to respond to proposal requests, liaise with clients, project scoping, and other business development initiatives
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Profound knowledge of Ontario’s mining sector
  • Experience in engineering design studies from conceptual to detailed levels for tailings, waste rock, and water management systems, including dams, dikes, and earthworks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to clearly convey and distill complex technical information to a variety of audiences
  • PEO member
  • Ability to balance project execution and business development
  • Entrepreneurial minded with a core understanding of business and the challenges of an engineering and geotechnical consulting services provider
  • Team player with experience in sourcing clients, building, leading, and managing a team
  • Awareness of professional standards of practice (Professional Engineers, Professional Geologists, PMP), ethics, and their applicability to Stantec’s business, risk management, and quality frameworks
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field (master’s degree is an asset).

Minimum of 15 years of geotechnical services work in the mining sector, with leadership, technical, financial management, business development, and consulting experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
