Job summary

Site: Queensway Health Centre. Status: Part Time. Number of Vacancies: 1. Hours of Work / Shifts: Monday – Sunday / days, evenings and weekends. Department: Nutrition and Food Services. File #: 4417. Role Level: CUPEC04, $26.469 – $30.534 per hour.

Position Summary

Cook (Red Seal) – prepares and cooks a variety of food items for patient meal assembly following standardized recipes. Develops standardized recipes and preparation plans for new menu items. Maintains safe food handling practices and adheres to recipes, portion sizes and preparation methods. Maintains clean, safe, and sanitary work areas and participates in quality and safety audits as required by relevant legislation.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares and cooks a variety of food items for patient meal assembly as assigned following standardized recipes
  • Develop standardized recipes and preparation plan for new menu items
  • Knowledge of safe food handling including tempering methodology
  • Adheres to recipes, portion sizes and preparation methods as specified
  • Maintains clean, safe and sanitary practices and working areas as prescribed
  • Participates in and adheres to quality and safety audits and standards as per requirements and relevant legislation
  • Maintains accurate food production records
  • Practices safe and proper use of food service equipment
  • Provides input for food supply orders
  • Identifies maintenance needs and informs Team Leader or submits work orders as appropriate
  • Maintains and sanitizes work area and all related equipment
  • Knowledge of Combi oven, Blast chiller, soup kettle, steamer, and gas cook range
  • Performs other related duties as required
Key Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education and / or equivalent, required
  • Red Seal certification, required
  • Valid Food Handler Certificate, required
  • Ability to communicate effectively, read, write and follow instructions
  • A minimum of three (3) years cooking experience in an institutional food service environment, required
  • Knowledge of and apply HACCP protocols, required
  • Experience in a cold-plating environment would be an asset
  • Be physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job
  • A positive work and attendance record is essential
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service skills
Physical Demands
  • Considerable walking, standing, bending and lifting – up to 50lbs
  • Working in both hot and cold temperature environments, including a cold environment (freezer) for part of each day
  • Standing for long periods of time in one spot
