Independent, progressive, adjudicative leadership role in Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Labour Board is seeking its next Chair to lead in the effective and fair resolution and independent adjudication of responsibilities assigned to it under the Labour Board Act and sections of other Acts and Regulations. The Board strives to provide timely, effective, accessible dispute resolution processes and consistent and impartial decisions across all employment sectors. The Board is comprised of a full-time Chair, part-time Vice-Chairs, and members who represent Nova Scotia employers and employees.

As a full-time leader, the Chair ensures the Board operates smoothly and acts in a fair and balanced manner. The Chair performs adjudicative/case management functions, conducts mediation with the parties, and hears, decides, and renders written decisions on various board matters in a timely manner. The Chair sets the tone for the organization’s culture and ensures new members are welcomed and effectively onboarded. They work closely with the Chief Administrator on Board administration and case management and matters of facilities management, OHS, finance, HR, IT, Information and Privacy, and Communications. The Chair has a track record of building relationships with stakeholders and understanding the potential impact of their decisions on industries from both an employer and labour perspective.

The successful candidate is an established leader with a fair, open-minded, and respectful approach and is able to be accepted as a neutral by employees, labour, and employer organizations. They are a current member, or eligible and willing to become a member, of the NS Barristers’ Society and have significant and proven experience in a legal practice, adjudicative, academic, or government setting. The successful candidate has demonstrated knowledge and experience in labour, employment, and administrative law and the issues that employers and employees face daily, as well as a proven track record in impartial and fair decision making and effective dispute resolution. They have leadership experience and a history of working collaboratively with professionals and diverse parties.

The role requires an individual with excellent listening, communication, analytical, written, consensus-building, and facilitation skills. The successful candidate is innovative and possesses exceptional partnership and relationship skills. They are sensitive to the issues and vulnerabilities that under-represented groups face in the workplace and have demonstrated an ability to mediate conversations between groups.
