Background
  • The General Purpose (GP) Operator will exhibit a high standard of safety behavior and will ensure that all aspects of shipboard maintenance, rigging, slinging, painting and preservation, storage, housekeeping and general duties are carried out safely and effectively.
  • It is a MSM position as for IMO Resolution A. 1079/28 (As per Safe Manning Document)
Authority
  • The GP Operator has authority to carry out shipboard maintenance and preservation under the direction of the GP Foreman. The GP operator will ensure the safety of himself, team members, visitors and subcontractors within the limits of his responsibility.

Accountable For: Responsibilities & Standards
  • 1) Develop And Maintain Effective Working Relationships
  • 1 Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and visitors to the working environment.
  • 2 Establish and maintain effective communications with colleagues and supervisors.
  • 3 Carry out accurate and effective work handovers.
  • 2) Conduct Slinging and Rigging Operations
  • 1 Check preparation of loads for lifting. (Load is secure and stable)
  • 2 Use various lifting items (plate clamps, barrel lifters chain hoists etc.)
  • 3 Perform bundling and slinging of simple and awkward loads.
  • 4 Maintain slinging equipment (slings, hooks, webbing plate clamps, barrel lifters chain hoists etc.)
  • 3) Perform Effective Signaling/Communications
  • 1 Direct the movement and placing of loads using appropriate hand and radio communication techniques
  • 2 Rig, sling and position blind load using appropriate hand signals.
  • 3 Rig, sling and position blind load using radio communications
  • 4) Perform Preparation And Cleaning Of Equipment For Maintenance Or Coating
  • 1 Prepare the site for abrasive blasting and clean surfaces using abrasive tools
  • 2 Paint or coat the worksite using correct colors, paints or protective coatings.
  • 3 Examine portable power and hand tools before and after use reporting any defects immediately
  • 4 Restore the worksite after cleaning and coating
  • 5) Contribute to The Health and Safety of the Working Environment
  • 1 Work area within your own responsibility is kept clean and free of hazards.
  • 2 Positive action is taken to stop hazards and unsafe behaviors
  • 3 Alarms are raised as appropriate and/or acted upon using applied policies and procedures or initiative
  • 4 All potential and actual incidents are reported to the relevant supervisor
  • 5 Record maintenance activities and report defects immediately and effectively
  • 6) Monitor And Maintain Pollution Control Measures
  • 1 Controlled process or utility discharges from the area of responsibility to the environment are within prescribed limits
  • 2 Unplanned discharges are identified, halted where possible, and reported according to Management System guidelines.
  • 3 Equipment, waste or other materials for disposal are segregated properly and dealt with according to the correct procedure.
  • 7) Emergency Response
  • 1 Carry Out Emergency Response role (See Station Bill).
  • 2 Demonstrate competence in Emergency Response drills and exercises.

Pre-hire Qualifications and Experience
  • Certification as per STCW Reg A II/5 and Certification as per STCW Reg. AII/4.
  • Experience in a deck capacity in the offshore or shipping industries.
  • Rigging and Lifting Certified.
  • Banksman Slinger Certified.
  • Proficiency in English at a minimum of A2 level according to the CEFR international standard.
  • Medically fit according to The Company GEMS Instruction Health Requirements to Work Offshore.
