Secondary Head of English Key Responsibilities

Grade: Middle Leadership Group

Teaching allocation: 75

Responsible to: Head of Secondary

Responsible for: Teaching staff within the subject area

Within the context of the schools ethos, policies and procedures the Head of English will develop and implement subject policies, plans, targets and practices to:

  • Develop and implement procedures and practices which reflect Aspen Heights British Schools commitment to high achievement and effective teaching and learning;
  • Create a climate which enables other staff to develop and maintain positive attitudes towards the subject and confidence in teaching it;
  • Establish a clear shared understanding of the importance and role of the department in contributing to the students spiritual, moral and cultural development and in preparing students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of adult life;
  • Work with the Leadership Team to establish short, medium and long‑term plans for the development and resourcing of the department;
  • Liaise with colleagues in the secondary phase to ensure the effective transition of students into Year 7;
  • Monitor the progress made in achieving departmental plans and targets, evaluate the effects on teaching and learning and in close consultation with the Leadership Team use this analysis to guide further improvement.
Learning and Teaching
  • Leaders of Learning secure and sustain effective teaching of the subject, evaluate the quality and standards of students achievement and set targets for improvement;
  • Monitor to ensure curriculum coverage continuity and progression in the subject for all students including those of high ability and those with additional educational needs;
  • Ensure that teachers are clear about the teaching objectives in lessons, understand the sequence of teaching and learning in the subject and communicate this information to students;
  • Provide guidance on the choice of appropriate teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of the department and of different students;
  • Ensure that curriculum delivery is maintained and that meaningful work is provided for classes when colleagues are absent;
  • Ensure effective development of students literacy, numeracy and information technology skills in the subject;
  • Working in close consultation with the Leadership Team establish and implement clear procedures and practices for assessing, recording and reporting on student attainment and use this information to recognise achievement and to assist students in setting targets for future improvement;
  • Ensure that information about students achievements in previous classes and schools is used effectively to secure good progress in the subject;
  • Establish clear targets for student achievement and evaluate progress and achievement by all students including those with special educational and linguistic needs;
  • Evaluate the teaching of the subject in the school, use this analysis to identify effective practice and areas for improvement and take action to improve further the quality of teaching;
  • Ensure effective development of students' individual and collaborative study skills necessary for them to become increasingly independent in their work and to complete tasks independently when out of school;
  • Establish a partnership with parents to involve them in their child's learning of the subject as well as providing information about curriculum attainment progress and targets;
  • Develop effective links with the local community, including government agencies, business and industry to extend the subject curriculum, enhance teaching and develop students' wider understanding.

Know when and how to differentiate appropriately using approaches which enable pupils to be taught effectively; understand how a range of factors can inhibit pupils' ability to learn and how best to overcome these.

Make accurate and productive use of assessment; use formative and summative assessment to secure pupils' progress; give regular feedback orally and through accurate marking; encourage pupils to respond to the feedback.

Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment; high expectations of behaviour and a framework for discipline with consistent praise, sanctions and rewards.

Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources in line with the school's strategic plans and financial contexts.

General
  • To raise attainment and improve teaching in English and literacy across the secondary phase.
  • To establish opportunities outside the normal curriculum for the enrichment of literacy across the secondary phase.
  • To lead and implement initiatives to successfully deliver school improvement priorities.
  • To reflect on data analysis of your subject with the Head of Secondary and devise and deliver an action plan securing continuous improvement.
  • To carry out joint lesson observations with senior colleagues and support colleagues to improve their classroom practice.
  • To be involved in monitoring through work‑sampling, planning, scrutiny and learning walks.
  • To line‑manage English teachers within the department.
  • To promote the development of English language and literature at post‑16 level and extend provision including non‑examinable courses.
  • To be proactive in attitude to whole‑school development.
Health and Safety

Emphasises the importance of safety in all areas of the curriculum, communicating to the pupils the importance of a responsible attitude towards personal safety, the safety of others and respect for Aspen Heights British Schools property and equipment.

Perform all playground duties on time and with due diligence to safeguard Aspen students.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Ensure that all the necessary health and safety rules and procedures are being followed.

Maintain an awareness of all the health and safety measures to be taken when in school.

Communication with Parents

Communicates with parents on a regular informal basis and to deal with day to day queries.

Attends Parents Evenings as required and to provide accurate honest information regarding the progress of individuals at these meetings.

Reports to the parents in the form of written reports twice yearly or when required by the SLT.

Personal and Professional Conduct

All teachers are expected to demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct. Teachers must maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour within and outside school by treating pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect and at all times observing proper boundaries appropriate to a teacher's professional position.

Having regard for the need to safeguard pupils' wellbeing; showing tolerance of and respect for the rights of others; not undermining fundamental British values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Ensuring that personal beliefs are not expressed in ways which exploit pupils' vulnerability or might lead them to break the law.

Teachers must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which they teach and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.

Teachers must have an understanding of and always act within the cultural expectations of UAE and the policies and expectations of the school which set out their professional duties and responsibilities.
