A leading insurance company in Johannesburg is seeking an experienced senior audit leader to provide oversight across Short-Term Insurance portfolios. The role involves managing audit teams, ensuring compliance with standards, and engaging with stakeholders. Ideal candidates will have 7-10 years in auditing within the financial services sector, and a solid understanding of short-term insurance operations. This role is accountable for providing senior audit leadership across the Short-Term / General Insurance portfolios, with end-to-end responsibility for the delivery of the approved Internal Audit plan. The role leads specialist audit teams and co‑sourced resources, provides subject matter expertise, and ensures high‑quality, risk‑focused assurance aligned to the GIA methodology and professional standards. In addition, the role partners closely with portfolio executives and supports the Head of Audits in stakeholder engagement, integrated and combined assurance, and the preparation of audit committee and Board reporting, contributing to the strengthening of the overall control environment and risk culture.
The role has overall responsibility for managing specialist audit teams for the delivery of audits within the Short‑Term Insurance / General Insurance portfolios (OM Insure, CGIC & MFRF) and providing subject matter expert support across Old Mutual General Insurance outside South Africa.
Contribute to the development of the portfolio audit plan, including the ongoing maintenance of the audit universe and identification of emerging and thematic risks.
Execute and deliver the approved audit plan and ad hoc management requests within agreed timelines and quality standards.
Contribute to and provide updates on the Combined Assurance Plans for the relevant portfolios.
Ensure all audits are performed in line with the GIA Methodology, professional standards, and quality and performance expectations.
Deliver high‑quality, impactful audit reports with clearly articulated findings, root causes, agreed management actions and realistic due dates.
Facilitate agreement of audit findings, ratings and action plans with relevant stakeholders.
Analyse root causes of identified issues and provide practical, value‑adding recommendations to strengthen the control environment.
Enable an integrated audit approach where required,_Nincluding collaboration with IT Audit and Data & Analytics Services (DAS). непат>
Provide input into relevant committee and Board reporting.
Develop and deliver a portfolio‑level issues assurance plan, ensuring timely execution and adherence to quality standards.
Develop and maintain strong, effective relationships with Short‑Term Insurance portfolio executives, particularly in support of integrated and complex audits.
Support the Head of Audits in managing key stakeholder engagement and relationships across the relevant portfolios.
Represent Group Internal Audit at relevant portfolio governance forums and committees in the absence of the Head of Audits.
Support the Head of Audits in functional resource planning and integration, including the effective use of specialist and co‑sourced resources.
Implement the approved resource plan and take corrective action where capacity or capability gaps arise.
Manage the portfolio GIA statistics and monthly reporting process, engaging with first‑ and second‑line stakeholders as required.
Ensure ongoing compliance with the IIA Code of Ethics, professional standards, and GIA policies and procedures.
Apply data analytics and digital tools to enhance audit planning, execution and reporting.
Demonstrate a working understanding of AI‑enabled and automated audit techniques.
Identify opportunities to improve audit quality and efficiency through the use of data and automation.
Partner with IT Audit and Data & Analytics teams to deliver data‑driven audit insights.
People
Support the Head of Audits in the acquisition of specialist audit skills and resources.
Lead the performance management, coaching and development of direct reports to build capability and succession within the team.
Relevant university degree and professional qualification.
A postgraduate qualification will be an advantage.
Professional designations such as CA(SA), CIA, CFA, or equivalent will be advantageous.
Minimum 7 to 10 years’ experience in auditing and / or risk management (ERM) within financial services industry
Solid background in the short‑term insurance industry
Detailed understanding of the underwriting process across all key segments (Personal lines, SMME, Complex / Specialty).
Detailed understanding of the underwriting value chain (Policy & frameworks, insurance risk assessment, pricing, renewal, cancelation)
Detailed knowledge of reinsurance process
Knowledge of short‑term insurance distributions channels, group schemes/UMA, cell captive
Knowledge of the regulatory environment for short‑term insurance industry
Minimum 5 years’ experience in managing teams and multiple assignments
