Job summary

A mining company in Rustenburg is seeking a Safety Officer to ensure compliance with safety legislation and mine policies. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of underground mining experience and hold essential qualifications including COMSOC Level 1 and 2, and a valid driving license. The role focuses on conducting safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations, contributing to a safe working environment. Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups in line with company policy.

Job description
Purpose of the Job:

To ensure compliance to legislation, mine policies, code of practices, standard rules and procedures in respect of safety issues in a designated area of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
  • COMSOC Level 1 and 2 is essential.
  • Code 8 driving license is essential.
  • Minimum 3 years underground mining experience.
  • Valid Certificate of Fitness.

Key Performance Areas:
  • Ensure Compliance with the legal requirements in respect of health, Safety and Environment as specified in the Minerals & Regulations and the Mine Health Safety Act.
  • Assist with conducting Issue-Based, continuous Risk Assessment, hazards identification and monitoring risk assessments in the workplace.
  • Ensures that safety audits/critical area inspections are conducted, and remedial actions are implemented and closed out,
  • Conducts accidents and incident investigations, following 3 days transmits a copy of the relevant accident, incident and all dangerous occurrence report to the Chief Safety Officer.
  • Ensures proper reporting and investigations on workplace incidents and implementation of remedial actions
  • Analyses and reports on Safety statistics and proposes and implements initiatives to reach safety targets
  • Monitors and makes recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding all equipment/ machinery, hazardous substances in the working place.
  • Advises on the safety principles pertaining to sources of mechanical/electrical energy and to non-mechanical/non-electrical sources of energy, and on application of safety and health principles regarding electricity in workplace.
  • Advises on which given methodology to use, performs on the job coaching to enhance individual performance in the work environment and ensures all employees have been properly trained.
  • Communicates safety milestones, best practices and monitors compliance to platinum rules.
  • Conducts legal compliance meetings with the Safety Reps and employees.
  • Reports any potential health and safety threat to the person in the immediate charge, not later than the end of shift.
  • At the end of shift, enter in ink in the book (inspection report) provided by the manager, his/her inspection report by the working spaces visited.
