Job summary

A mining company is seeking an experienced Safety Officer in Limpopo to oversee safety regulations in underground operations. The ideal candidate will possess a Diploma/Degree in Health and Safety Management, have at least 3 years of experience in mining environments, and be skilled in operational safety management. Responsibilities include conducting safety inspections, investigating incidents, and ensuring compliance with legal standards. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential.

Qualifications

• 3 years’ experience in an underground Mining Environment.
• 3 years’ experience in operational safety Management systems and ISO requirements.
• Experience in Raiseboring operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform roles and responsibilities of the Safety Officer as per MHSA regulation.
• Conduct Safety inspections.
• Investigate incidents & accidents.
• Maintain procedures for adherence to Group Standards and Legal Requirements.
• Communicate Health and Safety Awareness and Campaigns.
• Attend meetings for feedback to improve safety performance.
• Assist with mandatory report information gathering.
• Lead internal incident/accident investigations.
• Participate in health and safety audits.
• Manage and report on non-compliance issues.

Minimum Requirements

• Matric certificate / equivalent
• Diploma / Degree in Health and Safety Management
• Blasting certificate or Valid Trade Test
• Valid driver’s license
• COMSOC 01 & COMSOC 02 or equivalent
• Computer literate (Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Must have no criminal record
• Must be able to successfully pass all SAPS and Client Security clearance checks
• Must be from Lydenburg, Jane Furse and Burgersfort areas

Experience, Knowledge & Skills

• 3 years’ experience in an underground Mining Environment
• 3 years’ experience in operational safety Management systems and ISO requirements
• Experience in Raiseboring operations
• Knowledge of industry and related legislation and standards
• Emergency preparedness and response management knowledge and experience in the Mining Sector
• Effective Team Player and Effective Self-Management

Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform roles and responsibilities of the Safety Officer as depicted in the MHSA regulation
• Conduct Safety inspections
• Investigate incidents & accidents
• Maintain procedures for the operation in specific areas of responsibility, ensure adherence to Group Standards and Legal Requirements
• Communicate Health and Safety Awareness and Campaigns and on the job coaching of legislative and procedural requirements
• Attend meetings with the OHS Manager to give feedback and receive instructions to improve safety performance in area of responsibility
• Assist the OHS Manager with information gathering related to mandatory reports
• Assist HODs and lead internal incident/accident investigations
• Participate in 2nd and 3rd party health and safety audits in areas of responsibility
• Establish and maintain good working relationships and an effective communication system with the SHEQT Function
• Manage and report on non-compliance issues
