Job description
QA/QC Inspector Position

Leita Steel, a leading structural steel fabrication company in Africa, accredited to ISO **** and ISO **** Part 2, is seeking a meticulous and experienced QA/QC Inspector to join our team. Reporting directly to the QA/QC Manager, this role is essential for pre-weld quality verification, ensuring accurate fit-up of components by boilermakers and assemblers, and upholding our commitment to superior, compliant structural steel products.

Minimum Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in quality assurance/control within the structural steel fabrication, boilermaking, or heavy engineering industry. At least 1 year focused on pre-weld inspections or fit-up verification with hands‑on involvement in inspections.
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of fit-up processes, dimensional tolerances, and assembly techniques in structural steel fabrication. Familiarity with key industry standards, including SANS ****-CS1 (Construction of steel structures), AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code—Steel), and ISO **** for welding quality requirements. Awareness of South African regulatory standards, such as SABS/SANS codes for material handling and fabrication compliance.
  • Skills: Strong attention to detail and proficiency in using precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, levels, gauges) for tolerance checks. Effective communication skills for documenting findings and coordinating with production teams. Basic proficiency in computer software for recording inspections and generating reports (e.g., MS Office, digital inspection apps). Ability to identify errors, perform basic root‑cause analysis, and work in a hands‑on, industrial environment.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Pre‑Weld Inspection and Verification: Conduct detailed visual and dimensional inspections of fit‑up work performed by boilermakers and assemblers, checking for alignment, gaps, distortions, and assembly errors. Verify that components are assembled within specified tolerances per project drawings, SANS ****-CS1, and AWS D1.1 standards. Ensure all materials and sub‑assemblies conform to Leita Steel’s quality plans, material certifications, and ISO ********* requirements before release to welding.
  • Non‑Conformance Management: Identify and document deviations, such as out‑of‑tolerance fits or workmanship issues, issuing non‑conformance reports (NCRs) and recommending corrective actions. Collaborate with production teams to resolve issues during the production process, minimizing downtime and rework.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of inspections, including photographs, measurements, and checklists, for traceability and audit purposes. Prepare daily/weekly inspection reports for submission to the QA/QC Manager, highlighting trends in fit‑up quality and potential improvements.
  • Support and Compliance: Assist in material receipt inspections to confirm incoming steel components meet specifications. Participate in internal quality audits and training sessions to promote adherence to fabrication standards. Support the QA/QC Manager in coordinating with third‑party inspectors when required for high‑risk projects.
