MAT - Senior Civil Site Laboratory Manager

SGS Matrolab is seeking a Senior Civil Site Laboratory Manager to oversee laboratory operations on site. The role involves managing all laboratory-related tasks, including implementation, maintenance, and improvement of quality systems to ensure smooth functioning, excellent service quality, and cost efficiency. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, materials testing across soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregates, and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety standards are met.

The ideal candidate will be disciplined, respectful, deadline-driven, and passionate about maintaining good staff relationships. They should have a proven track record of delivering performance aligned with strategic objectives, ensuring compliance with quality and testing standards, and promptly reporting deviations.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Managing laboratory production planning and meeting deadlines.
  2. Liaising with clients and regional managers.
  3. Ensuring accurate reporting before signing and distribution.
  4. Implementing quality control systems and health and safety regulations.
  5. Managing multidisciplinary laboratory work including soils, concrete, asphalt, seals, and aggregates.
  6. Adhering to SGS quality and safety policies.
  7. Assisting technicians on site and in the laboratory as instructed.
  8. Performing additional tasks as assigned by supervisors.
  9. Following all SGS policies on site, including payroll, leave, and disciplinary procedures.
  10. Providing staff training as needed.
  11. Completing mandatory SGS training modules.
  12. Ensuring timely submission of timesheets, claims, and payroll instructions.

Qualifications include:

  • Relevant national diploma or Grade 12.
  • Driver's license.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in civil materials testing laboratories.
  • Competence in all tests (TMH 1 and SANS) across laboratory divisions.
  • Experience in laboratory quality control and supervision of fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with COLTO & SANAS standards.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
