Job Purpose

To provide technical support to lecturers during classes by making sure that equipment and materials are ready. Assist learners on a one-to-one basis with their projects. To ensure that machines are always functional and that they are serviced and well-maintained to ensure the smooth running of classes.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Matric certificate and registered as a medical laboratory assistant with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a medical laboratory environment.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

  • Assist with the preparation and issue of practical class material, including media, stains, and reagents.
  • Prepare equipment for use in the practical laboratories.
  • Ensure that laboratory safety regulations are maintained.
  • Storage and disposal of chemicals, reagents, media, and specimens in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Store keeping- monitor stock and consumable levels and ensure correct storage requirements are maintained. Maintain inventories of all assets in the laboratories.
  • Housekeeping – cleaning of all used equipment and glassware.
  • General maintenance of small laboratory equipment and the laboratory environment and working surfaces.
  • Photocopying – preparation of notes and other required documentation for lecturers and staff required.
  • General minor maintenance – check the lockers and keys; help with carrying of any heavy materials; assist with maintenance of equipment.
  • Technical knowledge and skills as required by a laboratory assistant registered with the HPCSA.
  • High awareness of laboratory safety requirements.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
