Job summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Care and Support
    Assist with the admission and preparation of patients for theatre procedures. Support patient positioning and safe transfer to and from the operating table. Provide comfort and reassurance to patients before and after surgery. Monitor patients under supervision and promptly report any abnormalities or concerns.
  • Theatre Preparation and Maintenance
    Prepare the operating theatre with the required equipment, linen, and consumables. Ensure cleanliness and readiness of the theatre before and after each procedure. Assist with cleaning and sterilisation processes as per infection control protocols. Dispose of waste safely in line with infection prevention and control policies.
  • Assistance During Procedures
    Support the scrub and circulating nurses with basic tasks during surgical procedures. Handle and pass instruments or equipment under supervision, if required and within scope. Maintain awareness of aseptic technique and patient safety at all times.
  • Equipment and Stock Management
    Check and restock supplies and consumables in the theatre and recovery areas. Report malfunctioning equipment to the Registered Nurse or Unit Manager. Assist in managing surgical linen and ensuring correct segregation after use.
  • Documentation and Communication
    Record relevant information accurately on checklists or as directed by the RN. Maintain clear, respectful communication with the surgical team and patients. Participate in handovers and briefings to ensure continuity of care.
  • Professional and Ethical Conduct
    Adhere to the Nursing Act, SANC regulations, and hospital policies. Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries. Participate in in-service training and continuous professional development.

SKILLS PROFILE EDUCATION Essential
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as an Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary.
  • Compliance with the SANC Scope of Practice for an Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary and all applicable Health Care Legislations.
Preferred
  • A grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
WORK EXPERIENCE Preferred
  • Relevant experience in the nursing discipline.
