Overview
Reporting to the Joinery Automation Specialist, the Engineer will assist with daily engineering and drafting tasks to create various technical documents to assist in the efficient engineering and manufacture of all R&C products.
Daily responsibility is focused (but not limited to) safety, quality, manufacturing efficiency, model integration, and supporting company goals.
Key Job Functions
- Investigate new techniques, products, machines, and equipment to improve the design or manufacturing process.
- Plan, prepare and implement new project scope, deliverables, timeline, project risk and calculate project cost on all relevant projects.
- Prepare a project schedule and assign resources in conjunction with departmental heads.
- Identify project risks and implement measures to mitigate these risks.
- Monitor progress against scheduled tasks and update schedule.
- Ensure that all project deliverables and milestones are met according to the project phase.
- Optimize productivity (man and material) by analysing current processes and methods and identifying improvement projects on the shop floor.
- Manage improvement projects and report accordingly on improvements made – cost reduction, hours reduced, etc.
- Support production with the implementation of improvement projects as needed.
- Plan projects, define scope and resources needed, define activities and due dates, develop cost estimates and budget, implement solutions and follow up to ensure successful completion.
- Create and manage various technical or supporting documents to be used in the manufacturing and quality control processes.
- Documents include manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, installation drawings, quality control drawings, check lists, technical bulletins, milestone tracers, standard operating procedures, joinery change request, and bills of materials.
- Design new drawings, undertake Engineering Change Request (ECR) process, and detail work on new products or projects.
- Communicate relevant information regarding the rolling out of new designs to the various departments (including feedback to the Project Manager) to ensure successful implementation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum: National Diploma (NQF Level 6) Engineering or related field.
- Ideal: BTech/B-degree (NQF Level 7) Engineering or related field.
- Experience: 1-2 years design experience in the manufacturing industry (boat building industry preferred).
- Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.
- Working knowledge of Solidworks (upwards) and basic knowledge of AutoCAD/DraftSight (upwards).
- Speed/Accuracy tests to be conducted in both programs/Nesting Software (prefer Alphacam).
- Working knowledge of MS Office package (especially Excel).
- Boat building knowledge will be advantageous.
