Overview
CUSTODIAN II – Maintenance and Custodial Services Department. The Custodian II maintains an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; assists with furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine custodial tasks with responsibility for cleanliness and building appearance.
- Vacuums, cleans, and extracts rugs and carpets; clean floors by sweeping, mopping, burnishing, and scrubbing; dust and polish woodwork, desks, furniture, glass, and other items.
- Service soap dispensers, towel dispensers, and similar containers; empty and clean wastepaper baskets and other refuse containers.
- Assist office staff with mail and deliveries; move and adjust chairs, desks, tables, supplies, furniture, and equipment; strip, seal and wax floors; remove spots and graffiti; wash walls, lavatory fixtures, windows, drinking fountains, drains, lights and painted surfaces.
- Operate power sweepers, burnishers, and other power equipment; inspect work upon completion and complete any unfinished tasks.
- Help direct work of Custodian I’s onsite; follow proper cleaning procedures and use chemicals safely; learn and utilize new tools and technologies as needed.
- Attend training courses and respond to on-the-job and training instructions; assist Custodial Foreman, Maintenance Foreman, Maintenance Leader and other team members with cleanliness, preventative maintenance, and minor building/grounds work.
- Respond to safety and operational concerns (e.g., ventilation, alarms, leaks) and take appropriate action; respond to immediate cleaning or safety needs as requested by staff or supervisor.
- Set up and remove equipment for activities; report facility preventative maintenance and repair needs; demonstrate leadership when directing custodial peers.
- Secure the building at end of shift; direct and escort students, visitors, and community members; travel between District sites as directed.
- Maintain effective working relationships with custodial staff, school personnel, students and parents; communicate effectively with diverse cultures and with those who speak limited or no English.
- Comply with all procedures in district policies and training.

Required Qualifications
- Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Two years of custodial experience or any combination of experience and training that provides the required skills.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations.
- Upon hire, demonstrate understanding of basic health standards to comply with District and State regulations and safety practices.
- Ability to comply with District and State regulations related to District buildings and safety.
- Ability to adhere to safety practices and to follow procedures for custodial cleaning products and equipment.
- Ability to follow a set routine at a pace that meets District standards and to meet deadlines and schedules.
- Flexibility to changing working environments; ability to use District cleaning equipment and solve equipment-related problems.
Additional Requirements Specific to this Position
- Must pass a physical exam.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Must possess a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.
- Must possess uncorrected or corrected visual acuity of 20/40 in both eyes.
Working Conditions
The Custodian II largely works indoors, but may work outside in all kinds of weather, and often in the dark. This job involves physical work and may include exposure to seasonal conditions, cleaning leaves in fall, ice and snow in winter, and window cleaning in summer. The incumbent will frequently stand and also walk, climb stairs and ladders, sit, push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach. Prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, pushing, bending, stooping, and kneeling may occur. The position may lift up to 55 lbs alone and more with assistance. The work environment can be quiet or moderately loud and may include exposure to fumes, cleaning solvents, vibrations, chemicals, toxins, dirt and power/hand-operated equipment.
