Cross Border Controller
Role Outline

Responsible and accountable for the co‑ordination and optimisation of Transport and sub‑contractor fleet operations. This includes process of Obtaining, Planning, Allocating, Executing and Closing of loads. This position typically involves managing the day‑to‑day activities that support fleet operations, monitoring performance, analysing data, and ensuring that the company meets customer service agreements, safety, and financial targets.

Key areas of responsibility include:
  • Receive and load requests
  • Assess fleet availability
  • Schedule load appointments
  • Optimize the route planning
  • Load and manage priorities
  • Ensure that all load details, shipping documents are accurate recorded
  • Ensure on time loading and off loading
Operational Planning and Coordination
  • Route Optimization: Oversee the planning and optimisation of truck routes to ensure efficiency, cost reduction, and on‑time deliveries.
  • Scheduling: Coordinate and schedule the timely dispatch of truckloads, considering driver availability, load capacity, and delivery deadlines.
  • Resource Allocation: Ensure that the necessary trucks, drivers, and equipment are available for scheduled deliveries, and adjust as needed.
  • Load Planning: Ensure that freight is loaded and transported efficiently, minimising any potential operational issues.
  • Tracking Shipments: Monitor the status of shipments and truckloads in transit to ensure they arrive on time and provide status updates to customers.
  • Problem Resolution: Address any issues related to delays, damaged goods, or incorrect shipments and ensure solutions are implemented quickly.
Monitoring and Reporting
  • Performance Tracking: Track delivery times, truck utilisation rates, fuel consumption, and on‑time performance.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Regularly monitor and report on key performance indicators such as cost per mile, load‑to‑truck ratio, and driver efficiency.
Financial Oversight
  • Profitability Analysis: Review the financial performance of logistics operations, including assessing profitability per route or customer.
Compliance and Safety Management
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all operations adhere to transportation regulations, including state, and local laws related to trucking, such as Hours of Service (HOS) and safety standards.
Customer Service and Relationship Management
  • Customer Communication: Act as a liaison between clients and the operations team to ensure service expectations are met and resolve any service‑related issues or complaints.
  • Service Level Agreements (SLA) Compliance: Ensure the logistics team meets customer‑specific service level agreements, including delivery times and quality of service.
  • Customer Feedback: Collect and analyse customer feedback to continuously with the view to improve service levels.
Technology and Systems Management
  • Software Utilisation: Use logistics software, GPS systems and transportation management systems (Load pad) to manage operations, track shipments and communicate with drivers and customers.
  • System Updates: Ensure that operational systems and databases are up to date with the latest data and operational information.
Risk Management
  • Contingency Planning: Develop and implement contingency plans for emergency scenarios, including rerouting deliveries or adjusting schedules when needed.
Continuous Improvement
  • Process Optimisation: Identify opportunities for improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, or enhancing service delivery through process changes, technology integration or driver performance improvements.
Qualifications
  • Matric
  • Degree/ Diploma in Logistics or Supply Chain Management
Experience
  • Min 5 years in transport/warehouse/logistics/FMCG environment
  • Min 3 years management experience
  • Customer Management at a senior level
  • Experienced change manager
  • Succession planning & development of key managers
  • Finance/Profit & Loss Management
  • Project Management

  • Understanding and prior exposure to Supply Chain Industry
  • Management of people processes and systems
  • Sound interpersonal skills with the ability to express an opposing view effectively and diplomatically
  • Sound knowledge of fleet routing, general administration and product line and container/truck types
  • Knowledge of the logistics process and fleet management software.
  • Ability to quickly identify and resolve issues with bookings, routes and driver co‑ordination
  • Good analytical and numerical skills
  • Must be able to document processes in MS Word and have the capability to draw up flow diagrams
