Job summary

A renewable energy developer is seeking an Assistant Manager – Sustainability & HSE to coordinate sustainability initiatives and ESG reporting across regions. This role requires expertise in engaging communities, excellent analytical skills, and a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Play a key part in implementing Health, Safety and Environmental practices while promoting sustainable development and compliance. About Our Opportunity

The Assistant Manager – Sustainability & HSE supports the delivery of YDE's Sustainability Strategy across all operating countries, with a core focus on ESG reporting and performance improvement. Based in South Africa, the role also assists with the implementation of Health, Safety and Environmental practices locally. A key part of the position involves Social Performance—helping de‑risk operations through community and stakeholder engagement, regulatory compliance, and monitoring Economic Development commitments. This role is essential to strengthening ESG transparency, embedding sustainability into YDE's culture, and supporting long‑term value creation.

What You'll Do
  • Take a leading role in refining, developing, and implementing YDE's Sustainability Strategy.
  • Coordinate sustainability and ESG reporting across all YDE countries, including the Annual Sustainability Report, shareholder requirements, and sustainability ratings.
  • Maintain and enhance sustainability data systems, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and audit readiness.
  • Develop dashboards and present performance outcomes to senior leadership and Board-level Sustainability Committees.
  • Work with Commercial, BD and Customer teams to position sustainability as a strategic differentiator.
  • Coordinate B-BBEE compliance documentation and maintain evidence files for verification, including SED, ESD and supplier development components.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with local communities, municipalities, CLOs and project beneficiaries.
  • Support community engagement activities to de‑risk projects and maintain strong stakeholder relations.
  • Maintain stakeholder engagement logs, grievance mechanisms and social performance documentation.
  • Support monitoring and reporting of Economic Development (ED) and socio‑economic upliftment commitments.
  • Contribute to implementation of YDE's Net Zero Roadmap and associated emissions‑reduction initiatives.
  • Coordinate sustainability campaigns, awareness sessions and training across YDE teams.
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Management
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of YDE's HSE Management System aligned with ISO *****.
  • Participate in site inspections, audits, toolbox engagements and incident investigations.
  • Support the promotion of a proactive safety culture across employees and contractors.
Environmental Performance & Compliance (South Africa)
  • Support implementation of environmental management processes aligned with ISO *****.
  • Assist in monitoring compliance relating to waste, resource efficiency and ecological mitigation.
  • Maintain environmental reporting records and support environmental improvement initiatives.
Quality Management (Limited Scope)
  • Support ISO ****-aligned processes within the QHSSE function.
  • Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement activities.
Essential – What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, HSE Management, Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years' experience in sustainability, ESG reporting and/or social performance, ideally within infrastructure or renewable energy.
  • Experience engaging with communities and stakeholders in South Africa.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Preferred
  • SACPCMP registration.
  • Training or certification in GRI, ISO *********** or IFC Performance Standards.
  • Experience supporting sustainability strategy or Net Zero planning.
