Overview

GIS Specialist - Remote within EU. We are looking for a GIS Specialist to strengthen our team, helping us design, implement, and enhance geospatial crop monitoring technologies, with a key focus on the ASAP (Anomaly hotSpots of Agricultural Production) system.

Contract Details
  • Duration: Initial contract of 100 days (extension possible, up to 800 remaining days).
  • Mode: Freelance and Remote work (within EU territory).
  • Headquarter in ISPRA (Varese, Italy).
  • Equipment: Laptop provided by the Commission.
  • Onsite presence: May be requested with 7 days’ notice.
Required Skills & Expertise
  • Strong expertise in GIS software and tools.
  • Proven experience in processing and analyzing geospatial data.
  • Proficiency in Python programming for geospatial applications.
  • Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL/PostGIS and spatially enabled relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience with GeoServer mapping server.
  • Ability to implement geospatial analysis tools and integrate them with other applications.
  • Experience in the agriculture and environmental monitoring domain is highly valued.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and maintain geospatial modules within the ASAP system.
  • Assist with deployment, configuration, and interoperability of ASAP solutions.
  • Design, customize, and manage local ASAP spatial information systems for partner institutions.
  • Ensure database performance and completeness in coordination with IT experts.
  • Integrate seasonal weather forecasts and yield forecast visualization interfaces into monitoring products.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to JRC experts in GIS-related tasks.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation of early warning and monitoring products.
Qualifications & Education
  • Master’s degree (EQF Level 7) or equivalent, ideally in Geoinformatics, Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, or related fields.
Soft Skills
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and international environment.
  • Strong team player, able to collaborate across multiple large-scale projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving and self-starting capabilities.
  • Fluency in English (minimum B2 level).
  • High integrity and discretion when working with confidential data.

About the Project

Since 1993, the Food Security Unit (formerly MARS) has been at the forefront of developing operational systems based on agro-meteorological models and remote sensing data to assess crop conditions and forecast yields. Initially focused on Europe, the Unit expanded its activities globally, with a strong focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the Unit contributes to global initiatives such as GEOGLAM, the IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification), and the Global Report on Food Crises. It also manages the Knowledge Center on Food and Nutrition Security, supporting decision-makers with cutting-edge tools for food security analysis and early warning systems.
