Leap29 is supporting a large-scale energy project in Italy. The work relates to a major gas development that includes offshore wells, subsea infrastructure, and upgrades to an onshore processing facility supporting long-term gas export operations. The scope covers new field development phases, flowlines, tie-ins, and reliability improvements across both offshore and onshore assets.

The Fibre Optic Cable Engineer is responsible for the engineering, testing, installation support, and integrity assurance of fibre optic systems used across subsea and onshore communication networks. This includes fibre optic cables associated with subsea umbilicals, topside systems, instrumentation links, and telecoms infrastructure.

Engineering and Design Support
  • Develop and review fibre optic cable specifications, routing philosophies, and installation requirements.
  • Support design of FO systems within umbilicals, junction boxes, subsea distribution units, and topside equipment.
  • Define optical budgets, attenuation limits, connector types, and interface requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards including IEC, ITU, API 17E, and project-specific FO requirements.
Testing and Verification
  • Prepare test procedures covering OTDR, ILM, continuity, and system acceptance testing.
  • Review vendor testing documentation for fibre performance, factory acceptance tests, and qualification reports.
  • Verify fibre performance through analysis of loss curves, reflectance, and splicing quality.
  • Support FAT/SIT campaigns related to fibre optic elements.
Installation Engineering Support
  • Provide technical input to fibre optic installation within umbilicals, jumpers, topside routing, and cable termination.
  • Review offshore installation procedures including pull-in, deployment, bend radius control, and protection measures.
  • Support offshore campaigns for fibre testing, integrity verification, and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate interfaces with subsea installation, umbilical, and controls teams.
Interface and Coordination
  • Work closely with umbilical, controls, telecoms, and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Liaise with vendors supplying FO cables, connectors, terminations, subsea distribution equipment, and test tools.
  • Participate in HAZID, design reviews, and constructability discussions.
  • Provide support to procurement, QA/QC, and logistics where fibre optic equipment is involved.
Documentation and Deliverables
  • Produce FO cable data sheets, routing diagrams, system architecture drawings, and test procedures.
  • Review vendor documentation and ensure alignment with project specifications.
  • Maintain installation records, test logs, and as-built data for fibre optic systems.
  • Prepare close-out reports and integrity dossiers.
Integrity and Operational Support
  • Support in-field troubleshooting of fibre degradation or signal loss.
  • Review inspection reports from ROV or diver campaigns where FO cables are part of the umbilical or support structures.
  • Contribute to long-term integrity planning for fibre systems across subsea and topside assets.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related field.
  • Five to twelve years’ experience with fibre optic cable systems in offshore, subsea, or industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of OTDR, ILM, splicing, connectorisation, and FO measurement principles.
  • Familiarity with IEC and ITU standards and subsea telecom/umbilical specifications.
  • Offshore exposure for installation, testing, or commissioning of fibre optic systems (preferred).
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
