A leading cloud services provider is seeking an Engineering Operations Technician to oversee the operation and maintenance of data center infrastructure in Cagliari, Italy. This role involves ensuring safety standards, troubleshooting technical systems, and providing training to technicians. Ideal candidates will have completed electrical training and possess operational familiarity with mechanical equipment. Shift work is required, and proficiency in English is preferred.

Engineering Operations Technician, Data Center Engineering Operations

The successful candidate will oversee the operation and maintenance of the electrical and mechanical infrastructure for Data Centers (DC) in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud regions. Our technicians are operating and maintaining AWS DCs’ world‑class mechanical and electrical infrastructure. In addition to technical operations and maintenance, the successful candidate will oversee facility operations and ensure the implementation of safety procedures.

The role requires a motivated, self‑managed person who demonstrates initiative and proactively seeks solutions to problems while striving for operational excellence. The work follows a process‑oriented approach: the candidate needs a strong willingness to learn new processes and adapt to rapidly changing operational scenarios with conflicting priorities.

As part of the Engineering and Facilities team, responsibilities include maintaining availability for customers, ensuring maintenance and operation of technical infrastructure, and upholding the DC facility.

Key job responsibilities
  • SAFETY – Follow and maintain the highest safety standards and diligently encourage a world‑class safety culture. Own the safety initiatives and projects to foster a strong safety culture, and ensure remediation of safety risks/issues in conjunction with other teams.
  • ENGINEERING & FACILITY OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE – Operational experience and familiarity with electrical and mechanical equipment, including Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Diesel Generators, Chillers, HVAC, Exhaust Fans, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), and Transformers.
    • Troubleshoot events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
    • Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment through routine rounds/log‑taking (temperatures, voltages, currents, etc.).
    • Supervise contractor or Engineering Operations Technicians to ensure proper operation and maintenance of all facility equipment.
    • Drive continuous improvement efforts on infrastructure through standardization of procedures and policies, while delivering performance against agreed metrics.
    • Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and assist in recruiting efforts.
    • Lead root cause analysis for operational issues, and conduct meetings with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to finalize mitigation strategies.
  • Manual handling and lifting of equipment may be required (weight limits in accordance with regulations).
  • Ability to work shifts (morning, late and night).
  • On‑call rotation reaction to off‑duty emergency calls.
Basic Qualifications
  • Completed apprenticeship as an Electrical Technician/Electrician or equivalent recognized training.
  • Broad operational knowledge and experience with and familiarity with electrical and mechanical equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Data Center engineering or job‑related experience.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) control systems and data collection/trending.
