Background

Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia) is a development and humanitarian organisation advancing children’s rights and equality for girls. In response to the flash floods and landslides affecting Aceh, Sumatra Utara, and Sumatra Barat, Plan Indonesia is mobilising an integrated emergency response under Sumatera HEAL response. Effective communication and information management are critical to ensure timely, transparent, and accurate messaging to affected communities, partners, donors, and the public.

The Opportunity

The Emergency Response Communications coordinator will lead efforts to coordinate humanitarian communication, manage information flows, and safeguard the organisation’s reputation during this crisis. Reporting to the Humanitarian Program Manager and coordinating closely with the Outreach & External Communication Manager, the Communication and Information Management (C& IM) Coordinator is responsible for developing and executing communication and information management strategies during humanitarian emergencies. This role ensures that affected communities receive clear, accurate, and culturally sensitive information; that Plan Indonesia’s response is visible and accountable to stakeholders; and that media, donors, and partners are kept informed of progress and impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and/or support an emergency team to produce required communication products and support the emergency communication strategy and donors.
  • Serve as the primary communications focal point for NOs, APAC, GH.
  • Position and increase branding of Plan Indonesia as a key player in the emergency response to help raise funds and advocacy purposes.
  • Through strong content highlight the humanitarian situation on the ground, cover Plan Indonesia’s response and reinforce Plan’s advocacy and policy position on the situation.
  • Plan, produce and coordinate content in conjunction with designated communications contacts in CO/APAC/GH.
  • Produce press releases and a range of compelling human interest child‑focused content such as case studies, eyewitness accounts, blogs, first‑person accounts, images, audio, video.
  • Package and position content for sharing with key audiences including external media, digital and social media, internal and key external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all content is available for everyone in the Plan federation to use by uploading all content in high resolution onto the global Media Bank or working closely with APAC/GH to ensure that everything is available on the Media Bank.
  • Collaborate with the country procurement and logistic staff to create a ‘price list’ of items for public appeals.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of our communications work.
  • Monitor the situation for challenges, risks, threats and opportunities related to the emergency context that may impact communications and public engagement approaches, messaging and operations.
  • Ensure our media work reflects a specific focus on the needs of girls and reflects advocacy issues.
  • Ensure brand visibility of Plan Indonesia in the field.
  • Support efforts for timely country office reports such as sitreps, weekly updates, and donor related materials.
  • Develop, maintain and update the country emergency communication strategy and objectives in liaison with the ER TL and humanitarian manager to include key messages, activities, logistics, equipment and other support needed.
  • Ensure that child protection guidelines for content are strictly adhered to.
  • Manage in‑country media requests and access to spokespersons.
  • Support material for CLT as media spokesperson during the emergency.
  • Work with designated CO communications contacts to coordinate, prioritise and deliver media interviews.
  • Host media visits.
  • Prepare spokespeople and media messaging/talking points.
  • Liaise with journalists/correspondents.
  • Develop, maintain and update media relations contact list/database.
  • Support VIP/KOL visits with comms visitor pack.
  • Responsible for capturing, handling, storage, analysis and dissemination of data pertaining specifically to operations and the populations of concern, including demographic and statistical information.
  • Facilitate information flow to ensure that Plan Indonesia decision makers, partners and external stakeholders receive the information they require.
  • Produce regular SitReps throughout the emergency.
  • Prepare infographics and support the production of external communications products.
  • Strengthen and streamline existing IM systems to meet time‑critical information demands and requirements.
  • When required, establish new systems and processes to collect, analyse, synthesise and store data.
  • Ensure all Information Management products have a strong gender focus.
  • Support external representation.
Requirements for the Role
  • University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Humanitarian Affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience in communications, with at least 3 years in humanitarian/emergency contexts.
  • Proven expertise in information management and humanitarian communication standards.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Experience working with media, humanitarian clusters, and government agencies.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms.
  • Ability to work under pressure in rapidly changing environments.
  • Experience of communications in disaster and emergency response.
  • High level of understanding of media landscape, social media and Information Technology.
  • Understanding of Plan International’s child protection policy and brand guidelines.
  • Experience of working with photographers/videographers, and negotiating rates and usage rights.
  • Technical ability in writing with an excellent command of English – both written and spoken.
  • Strong photography skills; additional technical skills are desirable, including proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or photo‑editing software.
  • Intermediate videography skills (including sound and microphones, lighting); additional technical skills are desirable, including movie‑editing software.
Location

Duty station is in Aceh – Lhokseumawe.
