Closing date is 18 January 2026

This is an exciting role within our dynamic and well‑respected Sleep and Ventilation service that will provide the successful candidate with a wonderful opportunity to practice and develop their skills and expertise in the management of patients with sleep‑related respiratory conditions and other complex conditions requiring ventilatory support. Based at the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea, you will play an active role in this busy and prestigious department, working between both the Medical and Surgical wards and will be involved with setting up and analysing sleep studies. You will also initiate patients on non‑invasive ventilators (NIV) and CPAP and be involved in troubleshooting any ongoing problems. You will actively participate in the follow‑up and ongoing review of patients initiated onto CPAP/NIV therapy via face‑to‑face and virtual platforms. You will have experience in setting up/analyzing sleep studies including oximetry, transcutaneous CO₂, respiratory polygraphy, WatchPat, actigraphy, scoring full polysomnography, MSLT, and MWT tests.

The successful candidate will work closely with all consultants and other clinical physiologists in the department, including members of the multi‑disciplinary team. They should be self‑motivated, have good communication skills, hold a BSc degree (or equivalent qualification) and be registered with the appropriate governing body.

About us

Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Hospital is the largest heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe. In February 2021 Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world‑leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. The merger created a newly expanded Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, with Royal Brompton and Harefield forming a new Clinical Group within the Trust.

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced clinician who is interested in developing their career in Sleep and Ventilation.

Job responsibilities

Perform and analyse all sleep studies including home sleep apnoea tests (NOX), transcutaneous CO₂ monitoring, oximetry, respiratory polygraphy, full polysomnography, MSLT and MWT tests for inpatients, and conduct virtual set‑up of sleep study equipment when required.

Participate in the sleep CPAP/NIV roster, including virtual telemonitoring services and face‑to‑face appointments for initiation, troubleshooting and follow‑up appointments, including a drop‑in clinic, with appropriate reporting (compliance reports, mask fitting and humidification). This will involve a variety of ventilator and CPAP brands, models and modes.

Perform and interpret blood gas (capillary) results, spirometry and SNIP tests as part of the NIV clinics.

Work the sleep and ventilation roster: 08:00‑16:00, 08:30‑16:30, 09:00‑17:00, 11:00‑19:00, 13:00‑21:30 shifts plus weekend work.

Participate in MDT meetings to discuss patient therapy and diagnostic studies, and communicate and support other Trust staff with equipment use and result interpretation.

Liaise with external clinicians and companies as directed by a manager.

Help train new staff in the department, assist with their inductions, and provide training to external NHS staff as required.

Contribute to service development projects and their implementation, and support trust and local agreed policies.

Support equipment troubleshooting, including returns to the manufacturer or Baywater engineering.

Be involved in the evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic equipment on the market.

Update departmental documentation such as SOPs, competencies and guidelines as directed.

Maintain self and departmental development with CPD and appropriate training as agreed during annual appraisals.

Provide direct patient care in domiciliary and acute settings with respect, dignity and privacy.

Escalate appropriately to management, including chief physiologists, band 8a lead for sleep and ventilation and consultants, as needed.

Complete all mandatory training as defined by the Trust.

Work effectively as a team member with good communication skills.

Participate in weekly stock check and report to managers for ordering.

Contribute to the continuous development of the Trust as a member of Respiratory Medicine and potentially as a member of quality/process improvement project groups.
