Job description

Select how often (in days) to receive an alert:

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.

AMP8, our next five-year regulatory period, will see us launch our biggest and most complex investment programme of almost £13bn, of which £6bn will be delivered through our capital programme.

This is more than double the size of the AMP7 capital programme and is an opportunity to drive real change.

Our new Plug and Play approach will be a collection of common parts that can be connected in different ways and work together (like rigs or tanks). They can be mixed and matched to create a whole range of different products.

Picture this as your ready-made catalogue of standard products. You can simply select the parts you need and then they arrive ready to go all in one.

This new innovative approach will help to combat the challenges of waste and water infrastructure, flooding and water quality. Be a part of something bringing benefits to our communities, health outcomes and environment.

Our Plug & Play methodology will enable us to build smarter, faster, safer, greener, and more affordable projects.

It could be the biggest challenge of your career. If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you.

We are looking for a Civil/Structural Design Engineer to work within our Plug & Play team, truly delivering for the future.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Do you have experience working within civil or structural engineering? Are you a Design Engineer looking for a new challenge? Do you like working in a fast-paced and challenging environment?

You will be part of a team creating innovative plug and play designs for civils, design & specifications from the concept and optioneering stage through to the outline and detailed design stage, co-ordinating multi-discipline design input to support where necessary. Would you like to build your career in a place where you can grow?

You will deliver projects to programme, within budget, to the correct quality standards. Be part of developing the future design team!

Within this role you will:

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to understand the root cause of the business problem that the standard design is aiming to address.
  • Propose, develop and support civil and structural design solutions from concept through outline and detailed design, contributing internal design work where appropriate.
  • Review coordinate and technically challenge civil and structural design produced by external consultants, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, specifications and project requirements
  • Undertake internal structural checks and calculations as required to support option selection, design assurance and independent verification of consultant outputs.
  • Identify, assess and manage civil and structural risks throughout the design process, including health & safety, environmental, constructability and operational considerations.
  • Support the launch and implementation of products within Severn Trent by creating Design Manuals, liaising with other teams such as commercial teams, etc. Conclude the appropriate product solution (and costing, liaising with commercial).
  • Support the development of commissioning and installation strategies for novel products, ensuring design are buildable, safe and suitable for site conditions.
  • Provide clear technical input to the Design team to ensure an effective usage of P&P products. Ensure the standard plug and play solution is reviewed, benefit appraised, risks and learnings are captured, and the design is continually improved.

You’ll be ensuring that appropriate civils and structural advice is provided to the project team so that the standard solution has an effective handshake between Severn Trent Product Team and Site Design Teams to enable proper installation of products on site!

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience, but we value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.

We want people who show up and roll their sleeves up.

Restless spirits who are ready to be part of something bigger, who care, who really care... because when you really care, you’ll go above and beyond. When you really care you don’t just talk about it, you do more.

We will be looking for someone who has:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in a civil or structural engineering discipline.
  • Solid understanding of civil and structural engineering principles.
  • Evidence of influencing key stakeholders to achieve pragmatic solutions.
  • Experience contributing to the design of civil/structural elements (e.g. foundations, concrete structures, steelwork, tanks, slabs or similar infrastructure assets)
  • Good knowledge of relevant UK design standards and codes (e.g. Eurocodes, British Standards) and their practical application
  • Practice of managing a product life cycle. Understanding of construction, installation and commissioning considerations, and how design decisions impact buildability and safety
  • Demonstrated experience of the considerations given to risk management in construction and operational design. Extensive involvement on working closely with supply chain in delivering projects (with emphasis on adherence to CDM design specification, H&S, outputs, and quality).
  • Knowledge on using CAD and digital tools, structural analysis and design software and office tools.
  • Experience in water, wastewater or similar regulated infrastructure sectors
  • Previous involvement in standardised or repeatable design solutions
  • Experience supporting cost estimation or value engineering from a civil/structural perspective
  • Working knowledge of CDM regulations and designer responsibilities
  • Chartered or working towards Chartered Status (ICE / IStructE or equivalent)

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.

And when it comes to inclusion, we’re making sure we keep up the progress with our wonderful working groups – LGBTQ+, Women in Operations & STEM, Disability and Ethnicity, who help us do just that.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

Working here isn’t just a job. You can build a career at Severn Trent. We’ll reward you for it, too. We have a range of benefits that recognise great work, and award-winning training to help you reach your potential. And we’ll also help you play your part in looking after the environment and the communities where we live.

With that in mind, here are just some of our favourite perks that you’ll get being part of the Severn Trent family:

  • 28 days holiday + bank holidays (and the ability to buy/ sell up to 5 days per year)
  • Annual bonus scheme (of up to £2,250, which is subject to eligibility)
  • Leading pension scheme – we will double your contribution (up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%)
  • Sharesave – the chance to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
  • Dedicated training and development with our Academy
  • Electric vehicle scheme and retail offers
  • Family friendly policies
  • Two paid volunteering days per year
