Role Summary

The University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry or a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry within the newly established Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute (IDRIS) in collaboration with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust where the successful candidate will undertake clinical duties. The university, founded in 1900 when Queen Victoria granted our Royal Charter, has always adopted an ambitious and progressive approach to education and research. We are proud to have fostered a global community of leaders and problem-solvers.

IDRIS is based within the School of Social Policy and Society, includes researchers in the School of Psychology and across other Colleges of the University, and was established as part of the 125th anniversary of the University of Birmingham. Staff within IDRIS have a reputation for undertaking complex clinical studies of health and social care interventions and educational research with children, adolescents, and adults with intellectual disabilities. We are a new research Institute, and we aim to be one of the most productive research groups internationally, and the leading research group in the United Kingdom in applied research involving people with intellectual disabilities. IDRIS is the home of some of the world’s most highly cited researchers working with people with intellectual disabilities. The successful applicant will join a growing research team comprised currently of five professors, three associate professors, four assistant professors, and more than 20 research staff and PhD students. Several existing senior staff undertake clinical duties within the NHS.

The successful post holder will undertake clinical work within Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist. The clinical component of the role will ideally align with the candidate’s research interests and will include three days per week of clinical work within a community learning disabilities team. As such, the post holder must have full registration with the GMC and a license to practice and hold a Certificate of Completion of Training in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities or already be included on the specialist register.

Post holders will have an appetite and aptitude for academic leadership and a significant track record of achievement dependent upon the grade of appointment. Experience leading and/or developing multidisciplinary teams is desirable. The successful applicant will be a clinical academic with research and education expertise that complements our research priorities, objectives and strengths. The appointee will share the School of Social Policy and Society’s values of criticality, interdisciplinarity, collaboration and engagement and will be committed to making the School an inclusive place to work and study. They will act as a role model for academic citizenship and be committed to engaging widely to continually improve research culture, particularly on dimensions of inclusion relevant to their substantive field of research.

OH and DBS required

The University is committed to safeguarding and we promote safe recruitment practice, therefore all associated pre-employment checks will be undertaken before any appointment is confirmed. Due to the nature of the work undertaken in this role all successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health and/or DBS clearance prior to appointment.

Informal enquiries

Use of AI in applications

Applications that rely too heavily on AI tools can appear generic and lack the detail we need to assess your skills and experience. Such applications will unlikely be progressed to interview.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We believe there is no such thing as a 'typical' member of University of Birmingham staff and that diversity in its many forms is a strength that underpins the exchange of ideas, innovation and debate at the heart of University life. We are committed to proactively addressing the barriers experienced by some groups in our community and are proud to hold Athena SWAN, Race Equality Charter and Disability Confident accreditations. We have an Equality Diversity and Inclusion Centre that focuses on continuously improving the University as a fair and inclusive place to work where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. We are also committed to sustainability, which is a key part of our strategy. You can find out more about our work to create a fairer university for everyone on our website.
