The Regional Science & Innovation Manager is a core part of the South West Regional Innovation Research Group, which is directed by and reports into the National Science and Innovation Board.

This is a fixed term contract until September 2027.

The Regional Science and Innovation Manager is hosted by Wiltshire Police but works across all Police Forces in the South West to engage, coordinate and drive innovative activities and initiatives that tackle policing challenges. You would be joining us at a very exciting time as the pace of research and development, including technological, and the opportunities to collaborate are moving at pace.

The role supports the Regional Innovation Coordinator and force innovation leads to coordinate, implement and deliver Science and Innovation activity at a regional level, working in partnership with other regional innovation networks and building collaborative approaches across forces and with academia and industry.

With a thorough understanding of the Police Problem book, the role supports the consistent delivery of baselining and evaluation of initiatives and will work with forces to source and secure funding to support and maximise the benefit from science and innovation projects and programmes.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

Coordination: Oversee regional Science and Innovation activities in partnership with other innovation networks.
Support: Assist the Regional Innovation Lead in raising awareness of policing problems and embedding innovation into regular operations.
Piloting and Blueprinting: Collaborate with the College of Policing to pilot and plan the implementation of innovative solutions.
Evaluation: Ensure consistent delivery of baselining and evaluation with the College of Policing.
Problem Translation: Translate the policing problem book into local innovation initiatives.
Mapping: Support the mapping of innovation activities.
Decision Making: Provide oversight of regional decision-making and consult with Senior Leadership Teams on funding and prioritisation.
Funding Guidance: Offer guidance on funding opportunities and applications.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

Hold a post-graduate degree in a science or social science discipline or experience of working at a similar level.
Hold a professional qualification or certification in relevant disciplines such as project/ programme management or business analysis.
Experience of delivering research and innovation within a policing or government environment with sensitive data, technologies or tactics.
Experience of developing and managing successful funding bids within a research and innovation setting.
Possess strong leadership and decision-making skills and have the ability to give purpose and direction to the regional innovation network and take and advise on strategic decisions.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, sufficient to write policy, plans, complex reports and engage with employees, managers, partners and stakeholders.
High level of interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, confidence, credibility and integrity in the delivery of the regional innovation network.
High level analytical skills and ability to understand and plan for local and national issues that affect or may influence the objectives and strategic direction of the regional innovation network.
Ability to think, plan and act with a creative and innovative approach to problem solving, delivery of outcomes and managing change.
