Principal/Consultant Pharmacist - Cardiovascular

The closing date is 22 December 2025

Come and join the team at GSTT in the role of Principal Pharmacist/Consultant (pending credentialing) for Cardiovascular! This role is responsible for leading the GSTT Cardiovascular Pharmacy team and developing pharmacy services within their portfolio to ensure patients receive the safest and most effective pharmaceutical care.

At all times, the post holder will work closely with the Clinical Services Lead Pharmacist to ensure that the services are developed in a strategic and forward-thinking manner and be provided with ample personal and professional developmental opportunities. The post will provide a dynamic link between clinical practice and service development by creating new models for delivering care and ensuring the best outcomes from pharmaceutical care are obtained.

The post holder will act as a role model for the wider pharmacy team and be a pharmacy expert in this field to ensure a consistently high clinical pharmacy service in line with corporate objectives and the NHS long term plan.

The role will be responsible for managing all pharmacy aspects of the cardiovascular service, including governance, quality and safety, effective transfer of care between health care providers and a close management of the cardiovascular pharmacy budget. They will work closely with the Cardiovascular clinical leadership team and have opportunity to represent the department at high level, strategic meetings.

Job responsibilities

As the Principal Pharmacist/Consultant (pending credentialing) for Cardiovascular Services, the post holder will be responsible for providing leadership, and line management where necessary, to the GSTT Cardiovascular Pharmacy team, inclusive of the following areas:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Cardiology
  • Heart Failure

The role will be responsible for managing all pharmacy aspects of the cardiovascular service, including governance, quality and safety aspects and a close management of the cardiovascular pharmacy budget.

The role will work collaborative with members of the wider Pharmacy Seniors Group to contribute to the development of the wider Pharmacy Clinical services agenda and associated workforce and departmental innovations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring leader to take on service development projects, work collaboratively across the MDT, undertake financial planning and management of a pharmacy service, oversee the development of appropriate pharmacy governance pathways for this specialty and undertake and support research in this clinical area.

Person Specification
Knowledge/Qualifications
  • MPharm degree (or recognised equivalent)
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Pharmacy Practice (PGCert, MSc or equivalent)
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Member of relevant professional groups (RPS, UKCPA)
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to prioritise and plan work effectively, alone and for a team, including the ability to delegate
  • Able to make informed and logical decisions, sometimes under periods of intense pressure.
  • Ability to provide highly complex information on pharmaceutical issues and impart knowledge to all levels of healthcare professionals (up to and including senior consultants/professor/executive director level)
  • Able to confidently manage risk
  • Ability to identify and analyse changes (including horizon scanning) in prescribing practices that may impact on the drug and wider budgets across the South East London Geography
  • Able to support the development and education of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, using a variety of mediums (written, spoken and digital technology)
  • Able to compile and present a business case to support service / team development.
Experience
  • Extensive recent post-registration hospital experience as a clinical pharmacist in a specialty aligned to cardiovascular
  • Experience of managing staff / acting as a line manager
  • Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals within and external to Pharmacy to deliver a service and achieve service improvements
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies, procedures, guidelines and patient group directions
  • Experience of clinical governance and risk management
  • Detailed understanding of the clinical audit process and Quality Improvement
  • Experience of managing organisational change and re‑designing services.
  • Experience of managing a budget linked to the delivery of a clinical service
  • Supported or led on the development of a clinical pharmacy strategy
  • Been involved / led on a Pharmacy related research project
  • Experience of service transformation / redesign
