Clinical Psychologist - Preceptorship Opportunity

The closing date is 31 August 2025

The post holder will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team providing inpatient, day patient and community service to patients with acquired brain injuries referred to the Specialist Neurorehabilitation Service. This will involve direct clinical work, demanding particular skills in communication where barriers often exist and in providing creative psychological interventions in a highly specialised area. The post holder will carry out formal neuropsychological assessments and provide formal reports, as well as providing feedback to other professionals working with that patient. The post holder will be expected to provide clinical input to patients who demonstrate challenging behaviour and to train and supervise other staff in the management of challenging behaviour. The post holder will be managed by the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and the Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist, who will provide appropriate supervision. This is a substantive post.

Please note: We will consider a newly qualified Psychologist in a Band 7 developmental post with the aim of advancing to Band 8A via Preceptorship. The Band 7 post will be full time, 37.5 hours per week, to enable appropriate development. Band 7 starting salary is £46,148 pro rata per annum. Main duties of the job
  • To plan and manage an appropriate personal case-load, to ensure service needs and priorities are met. To deliver that service at all appropriate locations. This will mainly involve working at Jubilee House, the day patient facility, Caroline House, the inpatient ward but will also involve working in the patient's home or in other community locations as appropriate.
  • To work closely and where best practice indicates, jointly, with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high quality service. To ensure that all personal clinical practice is provided from an evidence base or in accordance with best practice.
  • To assist in the development of a new training programme for staff for the assessment and management of challenging behaviour following brain injury, in accordance with providing a high quality specialist service.
  • To liaise with other agencies, both statutory and voluntary so as to ensure a co-ordinated approach to meeting patient needs.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Post Graduate doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
  • Additional training / CPD (seminars, workshops) in neuropsychology/neuro-rehabilitation
  • Additional training / CPD (seminars, workshops) in psychotherapy approaches
Experience
  • Specialist trainee placement in a neurorehabilitation or related setting
  • Post-qualifying experience within a neuro-rehabilitation or neurology related setting
  • Experience of supervising qualified and assistant psychologists
  • Affiliate member of the BPS Division of Neuropsychology
  • Experience of working in neuropsychology rehabilitation services
Knowledge & Skills
  • Wide experience of using complex psychological and neuropsychological assessment tools.
  • Knowledge of mental capacity legislation, DOLS and experience of assessing mental capacity and reporting complex findings
  • Ability to use formulation skills in a manner which incorporates neuropsychological problems with other factors including systemic/family issues
  • Experience in preparing in-depth neuropsychological reports and providing feedback of complex, sensitive, and emotive issues to patients, families and carers and other staff.
  • Knowledge and experience of psychological interventions relevant to neuropsychological rehabilitation, e.g. CBT, cognitive rehabilitation and interventions for trauma. Evidence of ability to apply these to a client group with difficulties in communication, reduced insight, and significant cognitive deficits.
  • Knowledge of and experience of dealing with neuro-behavioural difficulties using psychological models.

  • Able to provide & receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in a highly emotive and sometimes hostile atmosphere, in a range of relationships and settings.
  • Able to use highly specialist skills of empathy to overcome barriers to understanding and acceptance.
  • Able to draw upon a broad theoretical knowledge base in the analysis of highly complex facts or situations to arrive at appropriate formulations.
  • Able to compare and select from a range of treatment options, based on formulation.
  • Able to plan, organise and prioritise own workload.
  • Able to use supervision well to reflect on knowledge and skills, address difficult issues and improve practice. Ability to work independently but seek supervision when required.
  • Able to record and report on as required clinical information.
  • Able to contain and work with organisational stress and able to hold the stress of others, including patients and colleagues
  • Able to manage effectively verbal aggression from service users, families, etc and the risk of physical aggression.
  • Respectful approach to service users, families, carers, colleagues and other professionals. Willing to negotiate and can handle confrontation effectively and professionally.
Other
  • Competent in use of IT packages - word processing, e-mail and internet, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis.
  • Up to date knowledge of psychological research and national guidance relevant to the client group.
  • Knowledge of legislation and its implications for clinical practice with this client group.
  • Aware of the potential impact of discrimination & disadvantage on health and access to services.
  • Able to be flexible and adapt approach according to the complexity of patient needs.
  • Able to sit in constrained positions for a substantial proportion of working time.
  • Able to concentrate intensely for a substantial proportion of working time, during client contact, teaching/supervision sessions, team meetings, preparing written work etc.
  • Able to manage effectively frequent exposure to highly distressing/highly emotional circumstances and exposure to traumatic material/report.
  • Must hold full and valid driving licence

  • Able to communicate effectively in written and verbal English Language
