Job summary
A regional healthcare provider is seeking a Trainee Ophthalmic Technician to support doctors in cataract and corneal clinics. Responsibilities include pre-assessing patients, biometry, and ensuring surgical readiness. The ideal candidate will work closely with professionals to deliver high-quality care. This position offers progression to a Band 5 role upon competency completion.
Qualifications
- Complete competencies in Ophthalmics.
- Ability to work with Clinicians and Optometrists.
- Strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Support doctors in cataract and corneal clinics.
- Ensure patients are fit for surgery.
- Enter post-operative refraction data.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Cataract suite at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Trainee band 4 Ophthalmic Technician supporting doctors within Cataract and corneal clinics. Following the successful completion of Ophthalmic competencies there will be progression to a Band 5 Ophthalmic Technician post.
The position will involve undertaking a variety of skills including pre-assessing patients and ensuring they are fit for surgery, Biometry using IOL Master and / or A Scan , corneal topography. Entering post operative refraction data for patients. Working closely with Clinicians and Optometrists within the community.
Testing patients visual acuity, checking Intra-ocular pressures , performing Optical Coherence Tomography.
