Job description
Overview

As a leading Learning Disability and Mental Health Charity, we provide healthcare and support for people with serious mental illness along a recovery pathway influenced by a psychosocial intervention framework. We help people move along a pathway towards independence at their own pace and build coping and lifestyle skills within a therapeutic environment. We value our people and believe in making a difference through the service we provide. We offer a competitive salary dependent on experience (£17.51 - £21.41 per hour) and an annual holiday entitlement of 33 days (including bank holidays). Salary based on post-qualification experience, pro rata depending on actual working hours:

  • £34,144 per annum (£17.51 per hour) — As a preceptorship nurse
  • £36,679 per annum (£18.81 per hour) — End of preceptorship or up to 2 years post-preceptorship
  • £41,749 per annum (£21.41 per hour) — 2 years or more post-qualification experience
Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include:

  • To take charge of the service in the absence of the Clinical Lead and Senior Nurse Practitioner to ensure its smooth running and that standards of care are maintained.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes with service users, ensuring support is provided in accordance with individual plans.
  • To establish and maintain good relationships between service users, relatives and staff.
  • To ensure the delivery of an individualised treatment plan for service users.
  • To deliver medication management in line with company Policies and Procedures for Medicine Management, NMC and The Care Quality Commission.
  • An interest in mental health rehabilitation and promoting independence is helpful; transferable skills from other professional training are welcome.
  • Involvement in clinical reviews with the Responsible Clinician and liaison with GPs, MDTs and families. A full supervision/appraisal approach is available; daily support and guidance is provided by peers and supervisors.
About us

Oak Lodge is a Mental Health Independent Hospital. Lea Court specialises in the rehabilitation of people with severe and enduring mental health conditions. We aim to develop skills to reintegrate successfully back into communities with support from a strong MDT, including an occupational therapist, Responsible Clinician and nursing team, plus support staff. We value community links to support service users on discharge. Oak Lodge offers up to a two-year pathway promoting discharge from day one and a full assessment route for nursing and occupational therapy teams, reviewed within the MDT with monthly goal setting in collaboration with the service user.

Job responsibilities

In line with Alternative Futures Group (AFG) mission, vision and values, the post holder will provide:

  • Effective operational/clinical leadership and management to achieve service delivery aligned with business objectives, demonstrating outcomes that empower service users to control their lives.
  • Professional working relationships withAdvanced Practitioners, MDT, Head of Quality & Compliance, Quality Improvement Manager, Investigations & Compliance Manager.
  • Practice supervision of frontline staff delivering the clinical programme in line with supervision framework and organisational standards.
  • Key results areas include growth, quality, and people development; ensuring economical service delivery, compliance with statutory/regulatory requirements, information governance, performance management, and safeguarding.
  • Supervision, appraisal, disciplinary and grievance processes for staff performance; leadership and direction to support staff and ancillary staff.
  • Act as Named Nurse for designated service users; compile reports and presentations as required; promote best practice; lead and motivate teams to address inappropriate practice; ensure service delivery remains fit for purpose.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety and safeguarding of adults and/or children where relevant; uphold equality and diversity in employment processes.
  • Respect and adhere to AFG policies, operate within the law, and maintain professional development within the performance management framework.
  • Travel within the operational area as required; attend mandatory and developmental training; disseminate corporate messages and recognise staff achievement.
  • Operate in accordance with the AFG competency framework (Communication, Customer Focus, Empowerment, Initiative, Leadership, Infection Control).

All employees are required to be familiar with infection prevention and control policies relevant to their area of work. A legal responsibility exists to comply with Health & Safety at Work Act; confidentiality must be upheld; there are elements of risk related to challenging behaviours and moving and handling, for which appropriate training will be provided. Qualifications
  • Essential criteria: RMN (Registered Nurse on part 3/part 13 of NMC Register); RNLD (Registered Nurse on part 5/part 14 of NMC Register).
  • Working knowledge of current practice related to enduring mental health problems or learning disabilities; knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Care Standards Act 2000, 1990 Community Care Act); ability to participate in clinical supervision; evidence of personal development.
Experience
  • Recent experience with people with enduring mental health problems or learning disabilities; evidence of maintaining PREP.
  • Experience supervising staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Clear, concise communication in writing and verbally; ability to work as part of a team; effective interpersonal skills; positive attitude toward service users; working knowledge of MHA (1983) and related documents; commitment to self-development and staff development; ability to build and maintain effective working relationships; computer literacy.
