  • Manage long‑term care requirements through frequent re‑assessment due to the complexity and nature of the patient’s conditions.
  • Lead training and development of junior staff and other NICU MDT members.
  • Maintain current knowledge of specialised positioning equipment for babies on the neonatal unit and make recommendations for appropriate equipment.
  • Assess capacity, gain valid informed consent from child or carer, and work within a legal framework with patients/parents lacking capacity to consent treatment.
  • Liaise closely with parents, care staff and other professionals involved with this patient group and manage day‑to‑day running of the section.
  • Liaise closely with local physiotherapists regarding onward referral to community paediatric physiotherapy for babies requiring ongoing physiotherapy intervention.
  • Assist with reviewing, organising and participating in the neuro‑developmental follow‑up clinic with Neonatal consultants to assess children at 9 months and 2 years.
  • Provide specialist advice, teaching and training to other MDT members regarding the physiotherapy management of neonatal patients with neurological, orthopaedic and respiratory conditions.

  • Opportunities to develop comprehensive discharge plans
  • Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner within a team and as a lone worker
  • Teach and train others in positioning and handling babies with complex needs for assessment and treatment
