About the role

Make 2nds Count is a fast-growing UK-wide patient and family focused charity dedicated to giving hope to and improving the lives of women and men living with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced nurse with a background in breast care and/or clinical trials to join the Clinical Trials Service. The Clinical Trials Service is a free information and support service, here to help secondary breast cancer patients explore clinical trials as part of their treatment pathway.

Our Clinical Trials Nurses support secondary breast cancer patients throughout the UK, by answering questions about how clinical trials work and how to get involved, as well as conducting personalised trials database searches.

The role is external facing, working directly with secondary breast cancer patients. The goal is to deliver a specialist service supplying information and supporting patients to discuss clinical trials with their clinicians.

Duties and responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the clinical trials team to ensure that learnings are shared, best practice is applied and there is consistency of approach across the service.
• Work directly with patients to conduct telephone appointments.
• Communicate to patients how clinical trials work and how they may benefit them.
• Produce thorough and accurate clinical trials search reports using a number of clinical trial databases.
• Support the charity to review the effectiveness of the service, consider ways to continually improve it and ensure that patients' needs continue to be met as the service evolves.
• Deliver presentations as part of a programme of patient education and activities focused on clinical trials - these might include webinars and face-to-face events.

Person specification

Essential

• Registered Nurse (NMC registration required)
• Oncology nursing experience
• Knowledge of secondary breast cancer, including aetiology and treatment pathways
• Knowledge and understanding of cancer clinical trials
• Awareness of ICH/GCP principles
• Strong organisational and time management skills
• Ability to communicate complex concepts to patients in an accessible way
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Confidence to work independently as well as collaboratively
• Current membership of the RCN
• Flexibility and willingness to travel occasionally to educational events

Desirable

• Experience working as a research nurse
• Understanding of patient advocacy and involvement in research
• Strong IT skills, including email, Google Docs and data capture systems
• Experience in delivering presentations, webinars or patient education sessions
