Job Description:

ROLE HEADLINES

Job type: Full time, minimum 37.5, typically 40 hours per week

Start date: Mid July 2025

Location:

  • The formal contracted place of work is our office, located in King Street, Manchester - but this is a predominantly remote role (see below) where you will be based at home
  • This particular role will cover our engagement activity across the south east region (see below for those areas covered) and you will be required to be out and about in these areas regularly as part of the role
  • The role would therefore best suit someone primarily located in this region

Salary range: c.£35,000 plus access to company share scheme after 1 year's service

Annual leave: 25 days p.a. plus statutory Bank Holidays, birthday and one Friday afternoon per month

Work visas: If you require a visa to work in the UK, you must provide evidence with your application or your application that you are eligible to work in the UK or it will not be considered.

ABOUT THERMLY

Thermly Limited is a growing, Manchester-based provider of digital, software and other consultancy services.

The company represents the culmination of several decades’ worth of work in the built environment, digital, energy and finance sectors by the founders. We bring that experience to bear to develop innovative, digitally driven approaches to some of the UK’s most challenging climate related issues. Our highly customer-centric mission is therefore to harness the power of data, digital systems and collaborative intelligence to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

To that end, Thermly:

  • Develops its own data and software packages that support this transition using its own a dedicated software development team
  • Provides consultancy advice and support to both the public sector (at all geographic levels) and the private sector, aligned to its mission
  • Actively innovates and collaborates with like-minded and driven organisations to support and add value across all its activities, with a particular focus on facilitation and delivery of measurable carbon reduction activity in the built environment
  • Relentlessly focuses on understanding the needs of, and adding value to our customers, whether individual householders or multinational blue-chip companies

We are committed to delivering positive impact for all our partners, collaborators and stakeholders, and aim to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

DUTIES AND DETAILS

As a Community Engagement Specialist for Thermly, you will drive engagement with all our stakeholders across your region, building relationships with homeowners, local groups, local authorities, and our growing supply chain (installers). You will play a key role in developing the company's local knowledge expertise and developing a truly community-led approach to delivering Thermly's value proposition.

Region

The region this role is expected to cover includes the following areas:

  • Kent and Medway
  • East Sussex
  • Surrey
  • West Sussex

Duties

  • Lead and coordinate community engagement initiatives with stakeholders including homeowners, community groups, the public sector and installers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local authorities and community organisations to form long-term partnerships, and subsequently build trust with homeowners.
  • Identify, co-ordinate and represent Thermly at relevant events.
  • Provide intelligence and insights to the wider Thermly team about local opportunities and the most efficient/effective approaches to yield results
  • With support of our Partnerships Lead, develop and sustain positive working relationships with our supply chain in the area, identifying opportunities for better working practices and approaches in delivering work 'on the ground'
  • Undertake any necessary research (alongside our Research and Policy Lead) and utilise on-the-ground experience to better understand the audience
  • Leverage in-depth knowledge of retrofit, as well as Thermly’s products and services, to provide tailored advice and support within community settings.
  • Identify and co-ordinate local marketing and engagement opportunities (both digital and traditional/print) and collaborate with the marketing and design team to request, create, tailor, and deliver relevant content. It will be heavily influenced by the needs of the community, which you will identify.
  • We take a data- and evidence-led approach to ensure continuous improvement. You will therefore be expected to be able to interpret a range of data and evolve plans and approaches as required
  • It is anticipated that you will be getting out into the community (visiting installers, events, and undertaking community engagement) for up to three days per week.

To be clear you will NOT be required to visit individual householders in their homes as part of this role.

  • Whilst the role is primarily remote working, your formal/contracted place of work is Manchester and you will be required to attend the monthly team meeting in person in Manchester each month.
  • This role requires both regular travel and an intermittent ability/willingness to work on a weekend when attending events. In such a weekend scenario, time of in lieu the following week is provided.
  • Anything else that we need you to do – we are a small team and everyone contributes across the business when required to do so.

CANDIDATE CHARACTERISTICS

We are a small, diverse and growing team and you’ll need to fit very quickly into it – and to do that you must share our values as a business. You also need to:

  • Be confident and willing/able to collaborate across different teams and skill sets
  • Have great attention to detail – standards of written and presentational outputs must be nothing less than exemplary
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to plan, manage and handle multiple projects, activities and outputs simultaneously - showing a clear understanding of, and responsibility towards, the commercial needs of the company
  • Genuine calmness under pressure
  • Confidence in terms of an ability to engage with, and constructively advise, the directors and other senior management in all aspects of the role
  • Be passionate – and optimistic - about finding solutions to dealing with climate change. Your glass must be half full.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a community engagement role relevant to the climate sector
  • Strong understanding of climate change and the domestic retrofit sector in particular, including the impacts, costs, and benefits of various solutions.
  • A very good understandingof the climate technology supply chain and the process of installation of technologies, and how installers / contractors typically work
  • Experience of dealing with the public sector - including local authorities, elected representatives and council officers
  • Proven ability to engage with householders (our primary customers), with the ability to empathise and constructively inform (both on a one-to-one and group/presentational basis)
  • A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
  • A degree in a relevant discipline
  • An understanding of existing and evolving government policy and strategy in the retrofit sector

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

We are committed to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace. We believe that diversity is a strength and that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their background, beliefs, or opinions.

  • Diversity: We are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We believe that diversity brings different perspectives, experiences and ideas that help us to better understand and meet the needs of our clients.
  • Equity: We are committed to providing equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law. We believe that everyone should have an equal chance to succeed and reach their full potential.
  • Inclusion: We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued, respected and supported. We believe that everyone should be able to bring their whole selves to work and feel comfortable being who they are.

We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and identities. We are committed to creating a workplace that is free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. We believe that everyone has the right to work in an environment that is safe, respectful and inclusive.

I'M INTERESTED.....

Great. Please send us a pdf copy of your C.V. - which should be no more than 2 sides of A4. You are also much more likely to be invited to interview if you drop us a concise email explaining why you would like this role, ideally not using ChatGPT or other AI software to do so (we can tell, they're all the same).

The deadline for applications is 20th June 2025 - although we may close this earlier if a sufficient number of good applicants get in touch.

Please note we will not accept applications from recruitment agencies.

Please mark your email subject as ‘Community Engagement Specialist - South East’. Please note if we think you might fit well into our growing team, we are planning to undertake interviews in the last week of June 2025.
