Bookmark exists to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. We partner with primary schools and community organisations in the most disadvantaged communities to provide one-to-one reading support and create whole school reading cultures. Our vision is simple: we want every child to read. We are an entrepreneurial, tech-led charity supported by a nationwide network of volunteers, partners and supporters.

Each year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well. By inspiring new volunteers in their own communities, you will directly increase the number of children who receive regular, life-changing reading support.

To identify, inspire and recruit new reading volunteers within your local community, helping to ensure Bookmark’s volunteer base is sufficient to reach the children who require our support.

• Present Bookmark’s mission to local groups (e.g. Rotary Clubs, Women’s Institutes, book clubs)
• Establish relationships with local libraries, student unions, universities, faith groups and small businesses
• Organise and attend speaking slots, coffee-mornings or local events to raise awareness
• The above to include existing connections and establishing new local links

• Ability and drive to learn Bookmark’s story, our mission and values to influence prospective volunteers and relevant community leaders.
• Share impact stories and data to motivate prospective volunteers.
• Have an understanding/interest in general UK literacy landscape.

• Have established and cultivate long-term relationships with community leaders and organisations that can champion Bookmark’s work and refer potential volunteers.
• Build positive relationships with prospective volunteers.
• Willingness to collaborate with other Bookmark Community Volunteer Champions.

• Signpost prospective volunteers through the application process.
• Share informative collateral for volunteers to aid the onboarding process, e.g. open sessions, referencing guidance on Bookmark’s website, referral to Application Support Team.
• Follow up with interested parties to ensure appropriate guidance is provided to aid smooth onboarding.
• Providing all required guidance for applicants from registration through to application submitted.
• Guide and support interested individuals through the simple application form, providing encouragement and practical assistance where needed.

• Record outreach activity and leads generated
• Provide concise monthly updates on all activity within the community to the Reading Programme Delivery Manager

Essential

• Existing contacts in local community hubs or spaces, civic, educational or faith networks
• Genuine passion for improving children’s literacy and educational equity
• Confident communicator – able to inspire audiences both in-person and online
• Self-starter who can plan and deliver their own outreach schedule
• Organised, with the ability to track multiple leads and meet targets
• Digital-savvy (comfortable with email campaigns, social media posts and calls)

Desirable

• Experience in recruitment (volunteer or otherwise), community event organising or sales/fundraising
• Understanding of safeguarding principles when working with volunteers and children (training will be provided)
• Full UK driving licence (if outreach spans a wide rural area)

• Six hours per week (flexible scheduling)
• Six month initial contract
• No contracted hours during December, May or June (subject to start date) – ideal for candidates balancing caring responsibilities or seasonal work.

Monthly wage of £328-£360 (depending on Living Wage)

[£24,570 to £27,007.50 FTE] subject to changes proposed by the UK government.

£20 per each volunteer recruited directly by the employee once the volunteer has successfully carried out a reading programme.

Commission will be paid on a three-month basis. The requirement for recruitment leads generated is 33 per Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator

You will receive:

• A comprehensive induction to Bookmark’s programmes, digital volunteer platform, safeguarding policies and Bookmark’s history.
• Ready-made slide decks, collateral, data and impact statistics for presentations.
• Ongoing communication and support from the Reading Programme Delivery Manager plus access to peer support sessions with other Community Volunteer Champions.

• Recruiting an agreed number of trained volunteers over the contract period
• Establishing partnerships with local organisations that could continue to generate volunteer leads
