Job description
Exeter City Council is seeking a proactive and experienced Waste Operations Supervisor to support the delivery of high-quality waste and recycling collection services across the city.
We are looking for a confident supervisor with strong communication skills, a commitment to health and safety, and the ability to motivate teams and maintain high service standards. Experience within waste operations, environmental services or a similar operational environment is desirable.
Essential skills include a good general standard of education to GCSE or equivalent standard in two suitable subjects (Maths and English preferred), the ability to work as part of a team.
A full manual UK LGV Class C drivers’ licence is required for this role.
You will supervise operational teams delivering refuse, recycling, food, garden, bulky, trade and clinical waste collections, ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with performance standards and legal requirements.
A key part of the role is promoting a strong Safety, Health and Environmental culture. You will support the development and implementation of risk assessments, safe systems of work and policies, investigate accidents and incidents, maintain compliance records, and assist with staff training, inductions and toolbox talks.
You will manage staff and agency resources, monitor work standards, respond to operational issues and customer enquiries, and liaise with fleet services to ensure vehicles and equipment remain operational.
Working hours for this role are 08:00hrs to16:00hrs over 37hrs, although the role also involves covering waste supervision from 05:30hrs when needed. Some Saturday working will be required after Bank Holidays.
Waste, Recycling and Fleet is a busy service that reaches over 60,000 household in the city. We also provide many waste services to the local and national businesses within the city. Conducting over 67,000 collections a week.
We have a team of staff who are proud to work for the City Council and put the residents of Exeter at the heart of everything we do.
We are looking at innovative ways to achieve our Net Zero goals including adding to our expanding fleet of electric vehicles, we are updating our current fleet of diesel refuse collection vehicles to electric refuse collection vehicles which are charged by our very own solar farm.
As part of our continued commitment to reduce and recycle more waste streams from the doorstep we have introduced the collection of food waste to our service, we have currently rolled out to over two thirds of the city and will continue to do so to meet the government target.
