I am working with one of the UK's leading fresh produce specialists,delivering high-quality produce to the nation's major supermarkets and food service providers. They are seeking an ambitious and driven Projects and Automation Engineer to join their expanding team and help shape the future of maintenance and automation across our site.

Role Overview

This brand-new role presents an exciting opportunity to lead change in business maintenance strategy, drive automation initiatives, and deliver end-to-end engineering projects. Reporting to the Senior Site Engineering Manager, you'll take full ownership of site improvements-ranging from small machinery upgrades to full production line installations. As the site lead for automation, your expertise in Siemens software and structured project delivery will be instrumental in improving operational efficiency, reliability, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage site engineering projects from concept to completion.
• Update and manage Siemens software (S7, STEP 7, Simatic), ensuring obsolescence management and building the site's software library.
• Identify and deliver automation improvements across machinery and infrastructure.
• Conduct root cause analysis to resolve performance issues and improve OEE.
• Support implementation of smart factory software and drive digital transformation.
• Maintain site panel risk assessment register and implement improvement actions.
• Provide hands-on support to resolve automation and electrical issues.
• Collaborate with OEMs and automation partners to resolve complex technical faults.
• Train and coach engineering staff on best practices and systems usage.
• Ensure all project work complies with health and safety and company standards.
• Liaise closely with senior leadership on current and future projects.

Skills & Experience Required

• Proven track record in delivering engineering and automation projects.
• Strong working knowledge of Siemens software platforms (S7, STEP 7, Simatic).
• Solid background in electrical and automation systems.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and a structured approach to troubleshooting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience working in high-speed manufacturing or processing environments.
• Ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams and external contractors.
• Self-motivated, proactive, and passionate about continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship, OR
• ONC/HNC or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, OR
• Degree in Engineering discipline, OR
• Minimum Level 3 City & Guilds with 5+ years' experience in a similar industry.
