An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 General Neurology Specialist Nurse to join the Neurology Nursing Service across Luton & Dunstable and Bedford Hospital sites, working in line with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust values.
The postholder will work as an autonomous specialist nurse, providing high-quality, patient-centred care for adults with MS, Parkinson’s disease, MND and other complex neurological conditions. The role includes nurse-led clinics, advanced clinical assessment, medicines optimisation (including non-medical prescribing where appropriate), and coordination of care across acute, community and tertiary settings.
Working collaboratively with consultants, MDT colleagues, primary care and voluntary organisations, the postholder will promote teamwork, honesty, respect and inclusivity, acting as a key point of contact for patients and carers.
The role also contributes to education, audit, service development and clinical governance, supports workforce development, and deputises for the Lead Nurse for Neurology when required, ensuring safe, effective and equitable neurology services across both sites.
Work as an autonomous Band 7 Specialist Nurse, providing expert nursing care and case management for adults with MS, Parkinson’s disease, MND and other complex neurological conditions across Bedford and Luton sites.
Independently manage nurse-led clinics, including advanced clinical assessment, symptom management, treatment monitoring and medicines optimisation (including non-medical prescribing where appropriate).
Act as a key point of contact for patients and carers, supporting self-management, shared decision-making and continuity of care across acute, community and tertiary services.
Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, liaising with consultants, AHPs, GPs, community services and voluntary organisations to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service development and quality improvement, ensuring care is evidence-based and aligned with NICE and national guidance.
Provide education, supervision and mentorship to junior staff and students, supporting workforce development and succession planning.

Clinical practice
Work as an autonomous specialist nurse, delivering expert nursing care and case management for adults with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and other complex or rare neurological conditions across Bedford and Luton sites.
Undertake advanced clinical assessment, develop and evaluate individualised care plans, and manage complex symptoms in collaboration with patients, carers and the MDT.
Independently manage nurse-led clinics, including diagnosis support, ongoing review, treatment monitoring and follow-up.
Optimise medicines in line with Trust policy, including non-medical prescribing where qualified, and liaise with medical colleagues to ensure safe and effective treatment plans.
Undertake home visits and community reviews where clinically appropriate, ensuring continuity of care across pathways.
Communication and multidisciplinary working
Act as a key point of contact for patients and carers, providing clear, compassionate and timely information to support shared decision-making and self-management.
Work collaboratively with consultants, AHPs, GPs, community services and voluntary organisations to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
Contribute actively to MDT meetings, case reviews and cross-site service planning, ensuring effective communication and handover.
Leadership and service support
Support safe, effective and equitable service delivery across both hospital sites, contributing to workforce planning and service resilience.
Education, training and development
Deliver specialist education and training for patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
Mentor and supervise junior nurses and students, supporting professional development, competence and succession planning.
Governance, audit and quality improvement
Participate in and lead clinical audit, service evaluation and quality improvement projects.
Contribute to the development and review of policies, pathways and guidelines in line with NICE and national standards.
Maintain accurate documentation and uphold clinical governance, information governance and safeguarding responsibilities.
