Main duties of the job

You will provide highly specialist psychological assessment and interventions for patients with persistent pain and ME/CFS. A central duty will be to co-design, deliver, and evaluate our group-based Pain Management Programmes (PMPs) in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

You will act as the service's psychological expert, offering consultation, supervision, and advice to enhance the practice of all team members. Your role is crucial in embedding a psychologically-informed approach across the service, supporting both direct patient care and the professional development of your colleagues.

Job responsibilities

Monday Friday upto full time consideredP/T-F/T

To provide a highly specialist clinical psychology service to clients of the Community Pain & ME/CFS Service. To provide specialist psychological assessment, formulation, and therapy to patients with persistent pain and ME/CFS. To offer advice, consultation, and supervision on patients psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and other non-professional carers. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the services policies and procedures.

2. Key Responsibilities

Clinical

To provide highly specialist psychological assessments of patients referred to the service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations, and semi-structured interviews.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a patients psychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy.

To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, families, and groups, adjusting and refining psychological formulations as required.

To take a lead role in the joint planning, delivery, and evaluation of the services group-based Pain Management Programmes (PMPs).

To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual.

Teaching, Training, and Supervision

To provide clinical supervision to other psychologists, assistant psychologists, and trainees as appropriate.

To provide specialist advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals (e.g., Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses) contributing directly to patients formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan.

To contribute to the pre- and post-qualification teaching of clinical psychology and other disciplines, as appropriate.

Management, Audit, and Service Development

To contribute to the development, evaluation, and monitoring of the services operational policies and procedures through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation, and audit.

To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.

To manage the workloads of assistant psychologists and trainees, within the framework of the services policies and procedures.

3. Professional and Ethical Practice

To ensure the maintenance of high standards of practice according to the employer and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues in relation to both the specific client group and clinical psychology.

4. Person Specification

Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the BPS and HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.

Significant post-qualification experience working as a qualified clinical psychologist, including experience in a physical health or chronic condition setting.

Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC and BPS.

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, and management.

Experience of teaching, training, and/or professional and clinical supervision.

High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult-to-treat groups (e.g., chronic conditions).

Experience of working with patients with persistent pain and/or ME/CFS.

Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.

Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
