Job description

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced clinical practitioner to take up the role of Matron to provide visible, values-led leadership and operational oversight across our clinical services.

Reporting to the Director of Care, you will play a central role in coordinating the highest standards of palliative and end-of-life care for our patients and their families.

As line manager to all clinical leads, you will provide inspiring, hands-on leadership and ensure the effective day-to-day running of our services through a well-supported, trained, and highly motivated compassionate team.

You will play an essential role in ensuring that our specialist and compassionate care across all departments is safe, person-centred, and compliant with all relevant legislation, clinical standards, and regulatory frameworks.

Leading by example, you will also maintain a constant and reassuring presence across our clinical areas, offering expert guidance, responding to complex clinical queries, and supporting both patients and staff with empathy and confidence.

Working closely with senior leaders and project teams, you will contribute to strategic initiatives, drive continuous improvement in clinical practice, and ensure our services continue to meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve.

As a budget holder, you will ensure that care is delivered efficiently and responsibly, making the most of our resources while maintaining our established commitment to excellence.

Main duties of the job

As Matron for Clinical Services, you will have 24-hour responsibility for the operational management of clinical services, focusing on continuous improvement and standardisation of nursing practices with clinical leads.

You will participate directly in clinical audits and projects, examining and questioning practice and processes.

You will promote and disseminate relevant research and audit findings to support improvements in clinical practice and education, in conjunction with the Quality and Governance lead.

You will ensure the ongoing collection of patient, family, and carer views and experiences, reflecting these in service developments.

You will liaise with the Director of Care and finance in drawing up budgets each financial year and monitor expenditures, reporting any concerns or discrepancies.

You will promote new ways of working and service developments that support and contribute towards Hospice corporate objectives and improvement programs.

You will review clinical practices with the Quality and Governance lead, including the formulation and review of clinical policies and procedures to ensure best practice.

You will support the Director of Care in managing change, demonstrating knowledge of change management principles and practices.

You will maintain a regular clinical presence, demonstrating effective leadership, staffing, and quality of care.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

To have 24-hour responsibility for operational management of clinical services.

Gather and reflect patient, family, and carer views in service development.

Collaborate with the Director of Care and finance to develop budgets and monitor expenditures.

Promote new ways of working and service development aligned with organizational objectives.

Review clinical practices and policies to ensure best practice.

Support change management initiatives within the organization.

Ensure equitable access to services through operational strategies.

Deputize for the Director of Care as required.

Maintain clinical presence, demonstrating leadership and quality care.

Participate in decision-making regarding inpatient admissions.

Act as an expert resource and advisor to clinical staff.

Monitor performance indicators and develop action plans for improvement.

Communication and Relationships

Establish robust communication channels within departments and across the organization.

Keep the Director of Care informed on all relevant matters.

Provide reports and presentations to senior management, trustees, and boards as needed.

Deliver effective line management and staff development.

Supervise disciplinary and grievance processes as required.

Clinical Governance and Risk Management

Support audits and risk assessments, addressing shortfalls.

Review and investigate clinical incidents, producing improvement action plans.

Make accountable decisions within your sphere and liaise with the Director of Care on wider issues.

Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (degree level)
  • Post-qualification courses or evidence portfolio
  • Broad clinical experience, including specialist skills
  • Masters degree or willingness to pursue one
