Overview

We\'re seeking an experienced and imaginative Theatre Director based in the West Midlands (within easy commuting distance of Telford) to help shape the development of this exciting R&D project, which will culminate in a dynamic 30-minute written performance shaped by local participants\' stories, identities, and memories.

Our work emphasises co-creation, celebrating diverse stories and promoting cultural integrity while minimising environmental impact. We aim to ensure everyone feels valued and empowered to make positive changes in their communities through meaningful shared experiences.

Tappin\' In is a not-for-profit company founded after a successful project for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Culture Programme.

Responsibilities
  • Shape the narrative and direction of the piece
  • Lead or contribute to the process of devising with participants and collaborators
  • Oversee rehearsal processes and support a collaborative, inclusive approach
  • Coordinate with a professional team (DJ, choreographer, 3 actors) to support both creative vision and an inclusive process
  • Engage with diverse communities, fostering inclusivity and access
  • Guide the project from development to the cabaret-style work-in-progress sharing

The process will culminate in a cabaret-style work-in-progress sharing with an invited audience, ending in a celebratory DJ set curated and performed by our community DJs.

Qualifications / Requirements
  • Experience in devised, participatory, or community-led theatre
  • A strong sense of narrative, ensemble work, and incorporating lived experiences into performance
  • Ability to work alongside a professional team (DJ, choreographer, 3 actors), supporting both creative vision and an inclusive process
  • Confidence working across diverse communities, with a commitment to inclusivity and access
  • Based in the West Midlands, within easy commuting distance of Telford
