Overview

Paediatric Dentistry is seeking a Part time (5 PA) dentist to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking team. The post holder will show drive and initiative towards patient care, putting the patient first. They should have an interest in Paediatric Dentistry and ideally some hospital‑based experience, including management of children under general anaesthesia and treatment under nitrous oxide inhalation sedation in an outpatient setting. The post is located predominantly at the Dental Centre, St Thomas' Hospital, with attendance at the Dental Day Surgery Unit at Guy's and interaction with paediatric services at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Flexible shift patterns may be required to offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

An exciting opportunity to join the expanding Paediatric Dentistry team. The appointee will deliver a comprehensive Paediatric service for children. Applicants must have full GDC registration and experience in Paediatric dentistry for children. The successful applicant will develop the department's clinical services and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training.

Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust comprises two London teaching hospitals and employs thousands of staff with a large patient contact base. You must be fully registered with the GMC/GDC. IELTS may be required as a minimum language standard. Closing Date: TBC.

Core Duties and Job Plan

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 5 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out at both Guy's and St Thomas' sites. The plan will be discussed and agreed with the Clinical Lead within 2 weeks of start. A flexible shift pattern to provide evening or weekend services may be required.

Job Responsibilities

The post-holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Dental Services.

  • Provide high quality care to paediatric patients.
  • Be dentally qualified and have experience of paediatric dentistry at pre‑specialist level.
  • Develop and maintain competencies required to perform the duties of the post.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care activities and involve patients in decisions about their care.
Research, Teaching and Training
  • Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance translational research, meeting Research Governance requirements.
Performance Management
  • Work with dental, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance, clinical efficiency, and quality of outcomes.
  • Assist with financial management and data accuracy; optimise waiting list activity and demand management.
Medical Staff Management
  • Ensure junior dentists’ hours comply with EWTD and New Deal; manage leave and adequate cover.
  • Participate in recruitment and annual objective setting; oversee annual staff appraisals where delegated.
Governance
  • Review clinical outcomes, participate in clinical audit and incident reporting, and implement resulting actions.
  • Work with patient involvement panels and ensure NICE guidelines are reviewed and implemented in specialty areas.
  • Ensure adherence to guidelines and infection control practices; stay informed about best practice in Paediatric Dentistry.
Leadership and Team Working
  • Demonstrate leadership within clinical teams and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and Kings Health Partners as required.
  • Participate in specialty meetings, resolve conflicts through negotiation, and manage leave as per guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience (Person Specification)

Qualifications / Education

  • Essential: BDS or equivalent.
  • Desirable: FDS/MFDS/MJDF.

Professional / Statutory Registration

  • Essential: Eligible for full UK GDC registration and Licence to Practise.
  • Desirable: On GDC/GMC Specialists List in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of achieving this; MSc, MClin.Dent or equivalent.

Academic Achievements

  • Essential: Publications; presentation of oral/poster at relevant conferences.

Clinical Experience

  • Essential: Understanding of Good Dental Practice; diagnostic clinics for children in hospital settings; treatment under nitrous oxide inhalation sedation and under general anaesthesia.

Skills / Knowledge / Ability

  • Empathy and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team; knowledge of research methods; ability to diagnose broad paediatric dental conditions and provide Level 3 care.
