About the role

We're seeking a Backend Engineer who is keen to rapidly accelerate their career and make a monumental impact on a critical area of our business. What will you be working on

• Simplifying Complex Transactions: Developing and implementing robust backend solutions that make sending large amounts cross-border significantly less cumbersome and more convenient for our customers.
• Reducing Customer Anxiety & Building Trust: Crafting systems that create clear awareness about potential challenges with large transactions and help customers plan ahead, ensuring their funds are transferred smoothly and on time.
• Empowering Through Education & Features: Building tailored flows that enable high volume customers to easily discover and learn about everything Wise can do for them, ensuring they don't need to look elsewhere for their financial needs.
• Delivering Missing Functionality: Collaborating closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Analysts to bring new, essential features to life, including increasing in-product limits, systemising exceptions for large transfers, and laying the groundwork for future game-changing features.
• Driving Engineering Excellence: Contributing to the design, development, and deployment of scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend services, applying strong problem‑solving abilities, algorithms, and data structures to decompose complex problems.
• Learning & Growing: Working alongside experienced engineers, rapidly expanding technical capabilities and product intuition, with opportunities to take increasing ownership of initiatives.
• Customer‑Centric Impact: Continuously asking "why are we building this?" and connecting technical contributions directly to making customers' lives better.

What do you need

• A "Product Engineer" Mindset: You're an engineer first, but you think like a product owner, driven by solving real customer problems, not just writing code.
• Fundamental Technical Strength: A solid grasp of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and systematic problem‑solving, applied to build scalable, correct, and performant systems.
• A Builder's Spirit: Excited by building new features and improving existing ones to deliver tangible customer value.
• Ownership DNA: Caring about outcomes, taking pride in seeing work through from conception to deployment and beyond.
• Exceptional Learning Velocity: Absorbing new concepts, technologies, and domain knowledge at an incredible pace, eager to push boundaries and grow beyond current experience.
• Collaborative & Humble: A joy to work with, confident yet humble enough to learn from others and contribute positively to team dynamics.
• Backend Proficiency: Experience with backend development (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, Node.js or similar), understanding of API design, and database interactions. Distributed systems or microservices experience is a bonus, but a strong desire to learn and master these is key.
