Job description

Applications are invited for a fixed term full-time appointment to work alongside ST3+ medical and clinical oncology trainees providing acute oncology, outpatient and inpatient oncology services at NNUH. This post is to start as soon as possible, ending on 4th August 2026.

This post is ideally suited for someone who wishes to pursue a future career in Oncology or to explore the option of oncology as a potential career choice.

This post offers a varied work pattern, with duties including cover for:

  • The Acute Oncology Service
  • Weybourne Day Unit/Radiotherapy
  • Middle-grade on call rota
  • Opportunity for clinics, teaching and professional development

Main duties of the job

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS)AOS provides a 24/7 point of contact for all patients under the care of the Oncology Department at the NNUH. In-hours, medical cover of the service will be the priority of this post, as well as offering advice to other speciality colleagues and GPs in the community with support from on‑call consultants.

Weybourne Day Unit/RadiotherapyThe Weybourne Day Unit (WDU) is where the majority of systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) takes place at the NNUH. This post will be part of the medical cover for WDU offering advice to senior nursing staff, pre‑assessment of patients attending for treatment with acute problems as well as cover for emergencies (e.g. reactions and extravasation).

Middle-grade on call rotaWard support for Tier 1 colleagues as well as help with the management of acutely deteriorating inpatients is provided by the on‑call consultant and a middle grade doctor. The post holder participates in a 1 in 7 weekend on call rota with the other ST3+ fellows and trainees.

Clinics, teaching and further developmentWhere staffing allows this position will contain protected time to attend consultant‑led outpatient clinics to gain experience and competence in the management of oncology outpatients. You will be encouraged to take part in quality improvement projects (with our audit and research leads) as well as experience radiotherapy planning.

Experience
  • Applicants from overseas must show equivalence to at least the Foundation Competencies from a UK affiliated Foundation Programme in the National Health Service or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years post‑registration experience.
  • Evidence of achievement of IMT1 competencies by the time of appointment
  • Training in adult safeguarding
  • 4 years post‑registration experience in medical specialties
  • Completion of 2y IMT or equivalent
Clinical knowledge and skills
  • Ability to apply sound knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Recognition of, and ability to manage, an acutely unwell patient
  • Experience and ability in practical procedures defined in the IMT curriculum (cannulation, thoracocentesis, ascitic drainage)

Circumstances
  • Flexible outlook on working hours.
  • When non‑resident on call must stay within a 15‑mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
  • Applicants must meet professional health requirements in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice

  • Applicants must have skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical and multidisciplinary team colleagues, colleagues in other departments and support staff, individually and in meetings
