A healthcare provider is looking for a dedicated Practice Nurse in Newton Abbot. The role requires prior experience in primary care nursing, with duties including patient care, chronic disease management, and various health assessments. Candidates should possess strong communication skills and be able to work effectively in a team. This is a permanent position of up to 36 hours per week, offering a competitive salary dependent on experience.
An excitingopportunity has arisen for a Practice Nurse to join The Bovey Tracey &Chudleigh Practice. This is a permanentpositionof up to 36 hours per week. Salary is negotiable depending on experience, however is expected to be at the higher region of Band 6 as we would hope for leadership progression.
The positionwill be well suited to an individual who has previous primary care nursing experience, withexperience in minor illness, womens health and chronic disease management. The individual shouldbe enthusiastic about providing high-quality patient service with strongcommunication and administrative skills. Non-medical Prescriber would be desired but not essential.

We are a eight Partner rural training practice with eight salarieddoctors. We have a varied and supportive clinical and administrative team,which includes two advanced nurse practitioners, four practice nurses, fivehealthcare assistants, a health and wellbeing coach, a socialprescribing link worker, a full complement of medical administrators and apharmacy team. We have a growing list size of 15,085 and operate from two purpose-builtbuildings.
Mainresponsibilities
Clinical Practice Nursing
Undertake uncomplicated dressings
Screening
Undertake screening including BP checks, height, weight, BMI & Urinalysis
Carryout Well Person Checks and New Patient Medicals
Undertakevenepuncture, following training.
Health Promotion
Make basic assessment of needs of patient
Provide nuturional advice on Obesity, Raised Cholesterol, CHD and Diabetes
Measuresand records BMI
Understand patients motivation to adapt their lifestyle
Offer lifestyle advice on smoking and exercise and refers as appropriate
Administerinjections under individual prescription or Patient Group Direction, followingtraining.
Administerchildhood immunisations under individual prescription of Patient GroupDirection, following training.
Ensuresafe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
Ear Care
Undertakeear syringing, following training.
Advisepatients about safe ear care.
Infection Control
Applyinfection control measures within the Practice according to local and nationalguidelines. This includes:-
oUniversalhygiene precautions.
oThecollection and handling of laboratory specimens
oSegregationand disposal of waste materials
oDecontaminationof instruments and clinical equipment
oReportingand treatment of sharps injuries
oDealingwith blood and body fluid spillages
Assistpatients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures.
Emergency Management
Iscompetent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Family Planning
Has abasic understanding of emergency contraception and refers patients asappropriate.
Adviseson risk of pregnancy and has basic knowledge of contraception options,following training.
Has aworking knowledge of the national and local Cervical Cytology and mammographyscreening programmes.
Candiscuss breast self awareness, demonstrate self-breast examination and providesupporting literature to patients.
Candiscuss and give basic advice on male health issues and provide supportingliterature to patients.
Care and Programme Management
Diabetes
Has abasic understanding of diabetes
Assistsin the diagnosis of diabetic patients and makes appropriate referrals
Suppliesappropriate material for patient education
Is ableto manage the emergency treatment of a diabetic patient withhypo/hyperglycaemic attack according to Practice Guidelines.
Respiratory Disease Management
Has abasic understanding of asthma care; its diagnosis, treatments and the principlesof self-management.
Checkspatients inhaler techniques and measure peak flow readings
Has abasic understanding of COPD treatment to support patients and make appropriatereferrals.
Nebulisepatients following assessment by GP/Senior Nurse.
Cardiovascular Disease
Has abasic understanding of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system.
Identifyand advise patients on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease i.e.BP, lipid, glucose monitoring, family history, smoking, diet and exercise.
Understandsthe basic management of patients with hypertension, angina, myocardialinfarction and cerebro-vascular accident.
Clinical Practice Leadership
Assistin clinical audit and the setting and monitoring of standards of care.
Assistand teaches others in clinical setting, including unqualified staff.
Act asan assessor/mentor to other staff where necessary.
Workseffectively in a team
Clinical Practice Development
Is awareof current research approaches to patient care and incorporates this inPractice
Has anunderstanding of the ethical dilemmas that impinge on general practice.
Supportstructures that are in place for the smooth running of the Practice.
Contributeto the efficient utilisation of the nursing resource.
Effective use of resources and stock controlwith an awareness of cost implications is required although no direct budgetaryresponsibility
