Job description
Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fixed term opportunity. This is a fixed term contract commencing ASAP. We are advertising a senior clinical fellowship in general paediatric surgery at Southampton Children's Hospital for one year, starting as soon as possible.

You will join a team of seven general paediatric surgeons and three paediatric urologists, seven registrars and one research fellow. You will need to have certificate of completion of training in paediatric surgery by the time of employment and will be expected to contribute to a strong teaching and research environment.

We are a large tertiary referral centre with a strong track record of research and publications and an established teaching programme. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and has demonstrated strong staff engagement in the NHS Staff Survey.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain at least two independent operative sessions each week (supervised).
  • Engage in ad hoc independent clinics, regular clinics, MDTs and teaching sessions, including regional clinics and regional operating lists.
  • Contribute to the department’s management and leadership activities; run the teaching programme involving laparoscopic and open surgical skills training and cover the curriculum in a structured way.
  • Mentor residents one-to-one in laparoscopic and open surgical skills as part of timetabled teaching activity.
  • Explore opportunities to focus on a subspecialist area of interest with support from the paediatric surgical team and adult surgical colleagues.
Qualifications and requirements
  • FRCS (paediatric surgery) and to have completed years ST8 or equivalent.
  • Certificate of completion of training in paediatric surgery by the time of employment.
  • Eligible for appointment at nodal pay point at least Nodal Point 5 with minimum 6 years of specialty training and higher specialty examination as appropriate (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) as part of progression criteria.
  • A portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression criteria in line with the Curriculum for the speciality.
Contract, CPD and conditions

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet Home Office criteria prior to applying. An educational supervisor will be assigned; Continued Professional Development (CPD) is supported with options for study leave.

Salary details: basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, with additional remuneration for hours as applicable (e.g., weekend allowances and other enhanced pay) in accordance with the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Salary will reflect experience and qualifications.

On call and duties

You will be on a registrar on-call rota (one in nine weekends) and will have a weekly on-call at consultant level in addition to registrar on call, with consultant back‑up. There is a separate paediatric urology on-call rota which you would not be involved in.
