Job description
Overview

The Colorectal Surgery Department is seeking a 6 month locum consultant post available from September 2025. The post is based at St James's University Hospital and involves delivering colorectal and general surgical services in theatre, outpatient and ward settings. The role includes joining a team of 12 substantive consultants and contributing to teaching, education and research activities. There is a requirement to participate in the departmental on-call rota.

Main duties
  • Initial 10 PA contract. Provide specialist colorectal and general surgery, including ward rounds, surgical outpatient clinics and day case/inpatient elective operating.
  • Regular colonoscopy lists may be available for those with an interest.
  • Contribute to the colorectal on-call rota, typically on a 1 in 10 basis, with separate Colorectal and UGI/HPB rosters.
  • Engage in research and education within the colorectal unit and wider regional initiatives, particularly relating to intestinal failure.
  • Work as an equal senior member within the department and Trust.

The post will be based at Lincoln Wing, St James’ University Teaching Hospital.

Requirements of the post
  • Qualifications – MB BS (or equivalent); FRCS or equivalent; CCT with subspecialty accreditation in Colorectal Surgery (or within six months of same) or equivalent qualification; eligible for GMC registration with a current licence to practice; eligibility to work in the UK; demonstrated English language proficiency by accepted means.
  • Experience – completed a recognised training programme in General Surgery with a colorectal subspecialty interest; evidence of high-level clinical experience in elective and acute General Surgery; demonstrated higher training in Colorectal Surgery; involvement in research, teaching and undergraduate/postgraduate training; participation in regular clinical audits; good time management and teamwork skills.
  • Desirable – higher degree (MD/PhD) relevant to the subspecialty; experience supervising research by junior staff; attendance at appraisal/small group teaching workshops; attendance at recognised management training.
  • Other – must be on (or within six months of admission to) the Specialist Register; eligible to work in the UK; disclosure risks checked via DBS; sponsorship information may apply where relevant.
