Laboratory Technician

Apprenticeship, 3 1/2 years, Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree Programme at Sheffield Hallam University

Reporting to: Technical Director

Area: Laboratory

Purpose of Job

To provide testing services and quality control checks on products and raw materials from production, supplier and customer sites and support product and process development projects in accordance with internal methods as directed by the Technical Director.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm, 40 hour week

Role Description

This is a work role in a Refractories Laboratory and Plant; it provides a wide range of learning opportunities. It is hands-on, demanding, but rewarding. The team is committed to delivering the best products on the market and values hard work and passion.

There are good rail links between Scunthorpe and Sheffield.

Performance Requirements

This list provides an indication of the key routine tasks but the post holder will undertake duties outside the scope of this work as directed by their line manager.

Key Activities

Testing

  • Prepare samples and perform the required tests on products and raw materials, as directed by the Technical Director. Ensure the appropriate tests are undertaken in accordance with the applicable test method, as set out in the corresponding safe system of work, within the required timescales as set by the Technical Director.
  • Collation of data and recording of test results. Accurately capture and record the test results, using both paper and electronic formats.
  • Storage and disposal of test samples. Once testing is complete ensure samples are stored or disposed of in the appropriate locations to maintain a clean and orderly working environment.

Practical, methodical and meticulous approach. Ability to work independently in an organised manner, and plan and manage own workload.

Understanding and basic proficiency in Office 365, including SharePoint, Outlook, Word and Excel. Disciplined and committed to maintaining housekeeping standards.

Plant and Site Assistance

  • Internal trial support. Where applicable, assist with new product, process and/or material trials to support implementation and capture key information to assess feasibility and quantify impact.
  • External Supervision. When required, supervise external trials and installation, capturing relevant information to ensure quality standards are maintained and that key outcomes can be determined.

Good attention to detail and ability to work well in a team. Ability to adapt to different situations and work independently.

Administration

  • Maintain and adhere to filing system. Transfer test results and information to the appropriate locations on the server/SharePoint in a timely manner to ensure data can be easily located and accessed when required by the Technical Director or other interested parties.
  • Other. When required, ensure any results and written documentation are accurate, concise and forwarded to the relevant stakeholders and stored in the correct location on the server/SharePoint.

Understanding and basic proficiency in Office 365, including SharePoint, Outlook Word and Excel. Good organisational skills. High standard of written and verbal communication, with good command of English, including spelling and grammar.

Miscellaneous

  • General housekeeping, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities. All equipment and facilities must be kept clean and properly maintained at all times. General repairs (e.g. furnace floor, mould maintenance) must be undertaken in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Stock control. Maintain adequate supply of key items; report when stocks are depleted so they can be replenished.
  • Health and Safety. Observe health and safety regulations at all times. This includes fire, personal safety, security and local notifications. All near misses, accidents and incidents must be reported as per company policy.

Good level of practical skills and basic knowledge of working principles of equipment. Ability to monitor usage and understand stock control and lead-times. Ability to understand and follow instructions and safe systems of work.

Qualifications

Mandatory

GCSE grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, Science (Chemistry and/or Physics). And one of the following: UCAS points or equivalent as specified, to include mathematics or a mathematics-based subject. Examples include: BBC at A Level including mathematics or mathematics-based subject plus at least one other from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology, chemistry or other science or technology subject; DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a science or technology-based subject (including passes in mathematics and two other science or technology-based modules); or a combination of qualifications including mathematics or a mathematics-based subject and may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies; or relevant work experience.

Desirable

A-level in Science (or equivalent), ONC/HNC in Materials Science.
