The Head of English 16-18

The Head of Department (HoD) is responsible for the growth and performance of designated department(s) including teaching, learning and assessment practices and business planning.

Key Responsibilities

• Working closely with the Faculty Director for English & Maths, and Adult Skills, you will focus on the strategic growth, operational development and continuous improvement of designated department(s), adopting an agile approach to ensure the curriculum reflects trends, LMI, industry reforms etc.
• Be responsible for developing a curriculum offer that is relevant to local needs and in line with the College vision and liaise with relevant external partners to ensure the department maxiMis(es)es opportunities.
• Develop and improve quality assurance processes related to a range of key performance indicators, ensuring compliance with all relevant quality assurance requirements and regulations (both internal and external), taking a lead role in promoting excellent practice in teaching, learning and assessment and leading on teacher development across the Service.
• Ensuring curriculum leaders are accountable for the compliance of their areas with these processes and actively influencing a performance management culture that permeates within the service.
• To drive positive cultural change, embodying and promoting the values and behaviours of the college and empowering staff to reach their full potential. Ensure that the performance and development framework is effective for all staff.

Ideal qualifications, skills and experience

Our ideal Head of English 16-18 should have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

• Developing and leading the delivery of the Service’s annual quality cycle, including:
• • The observation of teaching and learning.
  • Observation training and standardisation
  • Performance monitoring
  • Rarpa audits
  • Internal and external verificatin to ensure the service meets awarding bodies’ requirements
  • OFSTED readiness
  • Other associated quality functions.
• Supporting the Director in the Self-Assessment process, including:
• • Supporting managers in developing high quality and evaluative self-assessment in their curriculum areas and offers
  • Monitoring the ongoing implementation of the self-assessment process and quality improvement action plans
  • Overseeing writing and updating of Curriculum, and at times Service-level, SARs (Self-Assessment Reviews) and QIPs (Quality Improvement Plans) and delivering associated training for staff.
  • Adopting and promoting a team-wide performance-focussed based approach with an aim of improving attendance, retention, and achievement and other KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Leading the timely prcess of curriculum planning with curriculum teams and ensuring they are appropriately and timely promoted to ensure the best success of meeting income targets

The Head of Department role carries a teaching commitment of 4 hours per week.
